Immigrants, and their children, are faced with incredible amounts of adversity – whether it be difficulty speaking and learning the native language, raising children and helping them succeed in school, or overcome the barriers to work. Having overcome these challenges, 2martyg (Martin Gomez) hopes that his illustrious music career can illustrate the importance of self-preservation to others in the financial and cultural settings of his youth.

Role of Music

Being a child of immigrants created a particularly difficult time for Gomez; the financial and linguistic difficulties which are common amongst these minority groups were significant influences over his life. Moreover, it is no surprise that as a result of the linguistic challenge facing immigrants, (plus other various factors) they can suffer knock-on disadvantages. In particular, it can be difficult to find suitable employment, housing, access to services or transportation. Additionally, it is common for foreign settlers to face prejudice and discrimination in the workplace and wider society – life was by no stretch of the imagination a walk in the park for Gomez. 

Inspiringly, he was able to overcome these walls placed in his path – crediting his ability to do so to his use of music as an escape from the reality of day-to-day life. Gomez maintains that the most important takeaway from this motivating story is that he was able to preserve his own identity through his music, on top of merely overcoming this adversity. This is of paramount importance because the artist’s identity is tantamount to their music’s identity; by preserving his identity and not conforming to general music trends Gomez has produced perhaps some of the most unique and eminent music pieces in recent years. He has achieved this by combining the vibes of several genres, including: Rhythm and blues (aka R&B), rap and chillwave. The consequent style of music that Gomez has produced is undoubtedly a reflection of his own past experiences; the only way for music amalgamating three contrasting genres produced over six decades to be created is from a place of pure vision. Furthermore, his music has significant purpose – it is not popular simply because of its unique and interesting sound but because of what it represents. Gomez has made it clear that the intent of his music is to assist others in similar financial and cultural settings to those he experienced in his youth – it sends a message that anyone can become successful by staying true to themselves, self-preservation and hard work.

Professional Aspirations and Personal Interests

Outside of his eminent career, Gomez passionately pursues a variety of personal interests and professional aspirations. Furthermore, he is a keen and avid snowboarder – an inherently creative sport which no doubt feeds into his incredible work. This is definitely reflected in his unique combination of R&B, rap and chillwave – the three components providing his music pieces with an exciting and novel personality. On top of this, another personal interest of Gomez is prolific philanthropy. After his career continues to gain notoriety he is adamant to give back and invest in his community as a result of the experiences of his youth. One possibility in which he could do this is the provision of additional recreational facilities. Supporting local charities with plentiful donations is always an appreciated gesture that is of interest to Gomez – the ultimate objective being the spreading of opportunities for young people from a background comparable to him.

In terms of professional aspirations Gomez similarly does not disappoint. He intends to release a long music video relating to his life – it promises to be another creative and exciting work of art that will only expand his reputation and enhance his legacy. It is also an intelligent decision from a business perspective, since only 2% of music videos are described as ‘short films’, this venture presents an opportunity to exploit an untapped market of media that could revitalise the leisure sector after the decline it has experienced as a consequence of COVID. As the end of lockdown nears, exiting this global pandemic will not be all that the world has to look forward to.
