When it comes to chemicals, transporting them in bulk must be done with great care. Chemicals can be hazardous to your health and shouldn’t be taken lightly. If you’re not taking the appropriate safety measures, things can go south rather quickly. There are a number of things you can do to prevent disaster from happening. Here are three of those things.

Avoid Carrying Everything At Once

This one is pivotal as avoiding this rule is almost guaranteed to lead to an accident. Carrying massive amounts of chemicals in your arms at once is not what you want to do. What you’ll want to do is have a cart on hand holding all of the chemicals. Make sure the cart has side panels as well. You’ll also want to ensure that the chemicals aren’t coming in contact during the transport. Be sure everything is prepped and ready to go for a transport service as Transport Resources so that you can avoid any accidents. While you are loading the chemicals onto the cart, do not pick up any bottles by the cap or lid. It’s also vital to wear eye protection while loading all of the chemicals in case of an accident.

Handling Previously Opened Containers

Knowing what to do with previously opened containers during the transportation is paramount. You should put those containers in a secondary container specialized to not allow fluid to pass through. Be sure to label these containers with the contents. The containers should be compatible with the chemicals you are putting in them. If you’re transporting gas cylinders, be sure the valve covers are screwed on. You will also need storage vessels that are approved if cryogens are being transported. Any materials being transported in a cargo bed should be well protected against extreme weather conditions.

Make Use Of A Spill Kit

Things happen, which is why preparing for an emergency is important. That should be a general rule in life but today we’re just talking about transporting chemicals in bulk. Have a spill kit on hand. This should include protective gloves and goggles, plastic waste bags, a broom, and a shovel. You should also bring with you a fire extinguisher with a 10/BC rating or higher since chemicals can be flammable. It’s important that you only perform clean-up when it is safe to do so. Calling 911 when in doubt is better than risking your life.

Following the tips laid out for transporting chemicals in bulk can help prevent accidents as well as lessen the damage if an accident does occur. It’s vital that you know exactly what you’re getting into before you begin transporting chemicals in bulk. It’s easy to tell others to be cautious when dealing with potentially hazardous chemicals but when it comes time to put it into action, you don’t want to be left scrambling to figure out what you should be doing when there’s no time to waste. Safety outweighs everything else, so take the proper precautions.
