3 Things to Know for a Non-CDL Driver Job

Are you a non-CDL driver looking for a job? Have you been driving for years, but only have your regular driver’s license? Unfortunately, this license is something that many employers don’t put in the same category as commercial driver’s licenses. That’s just one of the things to know before going for an interview. There are a couple of resources for otr drivers looking for work that can help you with the process.

Non-CDL Employers 

As a non-CDL driver, you may find fewer opportunities when searching for jobs. You may be limited to local companies, and many major trucking companies will not even consider your application as a driver because of the license. Nevertheless, there are still some excellent employers out there that do hire non-CDL drivers. Do some research about the company before applying or attending any interviews.

Non-CDL Requirements

A non-CDL driver is required to comply with all federal laws that pertain to commercial vehicles. Additionally, they may also be required to comply with state laws, such as vehicle registration and licensing requirements. In most states, non-CDL drivers are not permitted to operate a commercial vehicle if they have been convicted of driving under the influence or while intoxicated in the previous five years. 

Additionally, many states forbid the operation of a commercial vehicle if the person has had any serious driving violations during the previous 30 days. However, a state may waive these restrictions for non-CDL drivers if the offense occurred in another state and was punishable by a severe fine.

Different Types of Non-CDL Driver Jobs

Truck drivers are not the only ones who know how to drive. Forklift operators can drive forklifts, and anyone with a commercial driver’s license knows how to operate a truck. Secondly, if you work in an industry where there are not many CDL licensed employees, then you could end up making a lot more money than your counterparts who are supposed to be earning higher wages. 

Hazmat Endorsement 

One of the things to know for a non-CDL driver job is that you may not be able to get a Hazmat endorsement. Even with years of on-the-road experience, you may still not qualify for this endorsement. A hazmat endorsement is required to haul hazardous materials. Some companies will give you the option of not hauling any hazmat, but others will ask for the endorsement. If you do, then there’s a good chance that you can get the job, especially if you have experience and qualifications. 

Drivers License Requirements 

To drive a commercial vehicle, you are going to need an unrestricted driver’s license. This is in most cases is not an issue if you are over 21. However, most CDL holders will be over 25 and may not even have their unrestricted driver’s license yet. If this applies to you as well, then that’s another reason why they may deny you the job in the first place.

 Laws

There are several different laws that apply to non-CDL drivers. For example, if you are involved in an accident, you may not be able to give the other party a copy of your CDL record. Some companies will allow you to rent out your CDL as well. This is especially important if you still want to get your trucking license on the side. 

CDL Driving School 

Another thing to know for a non-CDL driver job is that you may not be able to take trucking classes at a CDL driving school. Keep in mind that there are some trucking schools out there, but they may not be accredited. Many of these drivers take on student drivers and may have the same schedule as you. 

CDL License 

It is always better to have a CDL, but if you are unable to get one, you can still look for employers that hire non-CDL drivers. If you do manage to land a job as a non-CDL driver, take it seriously, and hopefully, it will lead to a CDL in the near future. 

Training

Another thing to know for a non-CDL driver job is that you may need special training. This is usually through a local trucking company, but it can vary from state to state. Make sure you ask about these details in advance of your interview. You want to make sure they are willing to help you as much as possible because you will be driving their load.
