4 Common Signs You Have A Damaged Or Broken Sewer Line

The drains in your home are generally taken for granted. They simply connect all your appliances to the main sewer line and remove all waste products from your house. In most instances, they are effective. But, what happens when your sewer line is damaged or broken?

1. Slow Drains

The most obvious sign that something is wrong with your sewer line is when your sinks and other appliances start draining slowly. This tells you there is likely to be a clog in the sewer line. Closer inspection will tell you whether this is simply a build-up of debris or a result of a broken or damaged pipe. 

2. Extra Green Lawn

You should know the path that the sewer pipe takes across your property. If this goes under part of your garden and you notice that some of the grass on that sewer route is growing particularly well or is extra green, you have a damaged sewer line.

The escaping sewer is providing nutrition for the grass, helping it to grow better than normal.  

3. Gurgling sounds

When water and waste goes down your toilet or sinks you will hear the swooshing sound of water draining. But, if the drain makes a gurgling sound then you have air in it. In many cases, the air is coming up the pipe and needs to escape before the wastewater can go down properly. 

Air shouldn’t be coming up a sealed pipe. It is, therefore, reasonable to assume that the pipe is, damaged, allowing air in which is heading to your sink to escape. 

If you hear a gurgling sound you will need to investigate further, starting with the sewer camera you have recently purchased. Identifying where the air is coming in is essential to preventing it from becoming a bigger issue.

4. Bad Odor

It won’t surprise you to learn that a leaking sewer pipe will give you a bad odor. As the sewage can escape, so can the gas. This will rise to the surface near the broken pipe and may even be noticeable in your home. Sewage gas can be dangerous, it is important you take steps to deal with the issue as quickly as possible.
