4 Crucial Steps for a Successful Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Operation

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass operation can be performed open or laparoscopically. If you weigh more than 200 pounds, then you are likely to need open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. If you weigh less than 200 pounds, then you might be able to have laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery.

Before you decide on any type of weight loss procedure, it’s important that you know what to expect from the process so that you can make an informed decision about whether or not it’s right for your needs and lifestyle.Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery is a procedure that reduces the size of the stomach and shortens the small intestine. It’s often recommended for people who are obese and have tried other methods of losing weight, like dieting and exercise.

The surgery may help you lose weight by limiting how much food you can eat at one time. It also changes how your body absorbs nutrients from food. The Roux-en-Y bypass reduces your appetite and makes it harder for you to digest certain nutrients. This helps prevent overeating and puts less strain on your heart and other organs.

Here are 4 crucial steps for when look for the procedure for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass operation:

  • Preoperative Preparation

Before surgery, a patient will meet with their care team to discuss their health history and prepare for the procedure. The patient’s doctor may also order additional tests to ensure they’re healthy enough for surgery. These tests include an EKG (electrocardiogram), blood work and chest X-ray.

  • The Surgery Itself

The RNYGB procedure takes between four and six hours to complete, depending on how much weight needs to be lost and whether there are any complications during surgery. During this time:

The surgeon makes an incision in the abdominal area just below your breastbone; this is where your new stomach pouch will be formed.

  • Pre-Op Diet

It is important that you follow a preoperative diet for at least three to four weeks before going under the knife. This will help you shed off excess weight and improve your overall health condition before the surgery. During this period, avoid eating fried foods, sweets, juices and carbonated drinks like sodas and aerated drinks. You can also eat fresh fruits such as apples, bananas and pineapples along with vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and spinach.

  • Surgical Procedure

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure makes a small pouch in the stomach using surgical staples or stitches.A small portion of the intestine is then attached to this pouch so that food goes directly into it instead of first passing through your upper stomach where most of the absorption takes place. This is how your body gets fooled into thinking that you have eaten more than enough even though you have actually consumed less food than usual!

The surgeon then makes several smaller incisions in your abdomen through which he inserts surgical tools. This allows him to perform the gastric bypass operation through keyhole surgery, also known as laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery or RYGB (pronounced “ree-gee-bee”).
