4 New Hobbies to Try in Your Thirties or Forties

When we grow up, our friends and family coin us. We pick up hobbies that our classmates share or choose to play sports that our parents love. There’s nothing wrong with that. But many people experience a feeling of having to make up for things they didn’t try when they were younger. And even though that feeling can be a big burden, most people decide to just leave it be. But there’s nothing wrong with trying new things as you grow older. In fact, accepting new challenges can be pretty enriching for your personality and your self-esteem. If you´re unsure, which hobby might be the one for you, just go through our list of 4 new hobbies to try in your thirties and forties and find out if one of them is appealing to you.

Motorcycling

Most motorcyclists first rode a motorcycle when they were in their late teenage years. It can be challenging to take motorbike lessons when you’re older. After all, you may not be used to being in a school-like situation any more. Also, some things simply come easier when we´re young – mainly because we have less worries and life experience.

When it comes to riding a motorbike, your worries and life experience can come in handy, as they´ll keep you from becoming a foolhardy motorcyclist. Your attitude towards protective motorcycle gear like a good helmet, protectors and footwear is different than a teenager´s attitude. Oftentimes, safety seems like something limiting to young folks, which can be fatal.

If you start riding a motorcycle in your thirties or forties, you can enjoy the thrill of smoothly going on long country roads. Riding a motorbike will make you feel young again. It will make you feel free and adventurous. If that´s what you want, don´t be afraid of failing or of what others may think. Just go ahead and give it a shot.

Traveling

Some grownups look back on a childhood filled with travels to wonderful places all over the world – or at least all over the country. But there are people, who have not traveled a lot yet – maybe because their parents couldn’t afford it, maybe because traveling simply hadn´t been a priority to their family. But it’s never too late to start exploring the world.

What about a road trip to your closest coast? If you prefer hiking, traveling to a beautiful national park could be a great way to get used to exploring new places. Traveling can be expensive. If your budget is small, try low-budget traveling like house sitting or camping. If you can afford more, the world is open for you: Europe, Asia, Australia, all of the United States or even Africa. You may be older than thirty, but you still have plenty of time to become a globetrotter.

Being Creative

People, who´ve grown up in a creative household, where the entire family painted, drew or did crafts a lot, usually carry their love for being creative with them. If being creative didn’t play a big role in your childhood, it doesn’t automatically mean that you have no creative talent. You most certainly have it in you, and being creative can help you solve internal blockades, relieve stress and express yourself.

It doesn’t matter if you start painting on canvas, writing poems or knitting – what´s important is that you allow yourself to express your feelings through your art, and you´re never too old for that.

Playing an Instrument

Who doesn’t love music? A good beat gets most of us on their feet or at least tap their fingers with the rhythm. If you don’t know how to read scales and sheet music, it´ll be hard to play an instrument, though. But you can always hire someone, who can teach you everything you need to know in order to play the piano, the violin or the flute. As music is a great way of expressing yourself, it will enrich you.
