Having your clothes tailored is a long-forgotten service, yet there are still tailors operating businesses for this very purpose. If you have never had a single article of clothing tailored, you don’t know what you’re missing. The following four services provided by a tailor or alteration specialist are services people rarely know about but should frequently have done to their clothes.
Tailored to Fit Garments
People come in all shapes and sizes. The problem with having your unique shape is that clothes in your size don’t really fit you as well as they should. Having your clothes tailor-made or tailored to fit you perfectly means that a tailor takes down your every measurement to the quarter-inch.
A tailor knows if you have one leg or one arm slightly longer than the other, a waist that doesn’t quite fit one size up or one size down, etc.. The tailor then cuts, sews, and creates garments that fit every flaw unique to your body. This is why tailor-made clothes are held in high regard and cost as much as they do.
Take Clothes In
Taking clothes in means that the tailor takes your clothes and makes them smaller where they are too large for your body. It was once customary for tailors to take clothes in when people lost some weight and needed the same garments to fit them comfortably. You can also take garments in if you buy a larger garment you love but it is too big for you to wear. The tailor will open the seams, trim the excess cloth in different areas, and sew the garments up again.
Let Clothes Out
Conversely, if you put on a few pounds, build up a lot of muscle, or become pregnant, you may want to let your clothes out. A tailor opens the seams of your garments, adds cloth that is the exact color, type and weave to match the garments, and then sews up the adjoining seams to include the extra bits of fabric. In this way your clothes gain a size or three, allowing you to continue wearing them and not have to dispose of the clothes or give them away and buy new ones that fit better.
Lengthen or Shorten Garments
Back when your grandparents were kids, it was common to make garments with about six extra inches of fabric attached to the legs of pants and arms of long-sleeved shirts. The purpose for this was to slowly let out the sleeves and pant legs as the kids grew. It allowed children to wear the same pants and shirts for more than a year, which was very helpful because people couldn’t afford to buy new clothes all the time. If the pants or shirts were torn or wore out, they might be patched to keep them going.
Hemming and letting out the hems are part of what a tailor does. If you need hems put in or a shirt needs shorter sleeves, the tailor does that. If you buy pants that are just a little short, most modern garments have just enough of a hem at the bottoms of legs and sleeve cuffs that a tailor can let them out and create a newer, smaller hem.

A tailor or a seamstress can do the same services, although men are inclined to see a tailor and women a seamstress.
