5 Cruise Cabin Hacks You Need To Know

You have just booked the trip of a lifetime, a cruise to see a variety of incredible locations. This is many people’s chance to see the world all the while being surrounded by the beautiful ocean.

But, no matter how much research you do about what to bring, nothing will truly prepare you for the size of a cabin until you are in one. They are about half the size of the average hotel room and have limited space.

Many people make the mistake of believing that cabins are like your normal hotel room but on water, that is not true. Below we have curated a list of 5 Cruise Cabin hacks you can use to make your room work better for your holiday.

Bring A Travel Power Strip

There are few outlets on cruise ships, especially the older ones. This is not suited to today’s technology-based society.

In order to combat this, it is a good idea to pack a power strip. Here you can find the best travel power strip for your journey.

Make sure your power strip is compatible with the outlets on the cruise, you don’t want to have to panic buy a travel adapter at your first stop in order to charge your phone.

Create More Hanging Space With Magnets

Cabins infamously have no hanging storage. You usually get only 2 hooks on the back of your door and that’s it.

While you could use the old reliable of draping everything over the back of a chair, that just makes your room look cluttered. You also don’t want to waste precious closet space on jackets.

The best way to combat this issue is by packing powerful magnetic hooks. First-time cruisers may not know that most cabins are made entirely out of metal so you can stick magnetic hooks on essentially every surface to create hanging space.

Pack Spare Cards

Most modern cruisers have electricity-saving light switches in order to save electricity. This means you need to plug your room card into a switch in order to have electricity in your room.

While this is commendable for helping the planet, it is also very annoying. It means that you aren’t able to charge any of your devices while you are out of your room.

In order to get over this inconvenience, bring a spare card. Library card, business card, membership card, anything that works. That way you can put them in the switch while you are out of the room.

We are still trying to save electricity though, so only try to use this hack when it is needed, and remember to turn off the lights when you leave your cabin.

Create Room Dividers

Remember those magnetic hooks from a previous hack? They can also be used to create room dividers.

Cabins are small and there are usually no doors between the sitting and sleeping areas. This isn’t helpful when you are traveling with multiple people or children.

In order to get a level of privacy in your room, you can use magnetic hooks and a shower curtain to make a room divider. Simply place the hooks on the ceiling and attach your shower curtain.

You are also able to use this hack between 2 single beds for extra privacy. This way someone doesn’t have to constantly get dressed in the bathroom.

Try to pick a nice patterned shower curtain since you will be seeing it a lot, and make sure that you can’t see through it, that would defeat the purpose of a DIY room divider.

Bring Your Own Romantic Lighting

For many couples, a romantic cruise is the ultimate honeymoon. You get a romantic getaway at sea with the one you love.

Unfortunately, you aren’t allowed candles on cruise ships. You may think this is romantic candlelit dinners are off the table, but you can get around this by bringing battery-operated tealights.

These are small so take up little luggage space and can be spread across your cabin. They also make a fantastic night light so you don’t have to use a precious outlet.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, these hacks will allow you to turn your cabin into a more livable space, and overall your cruise a more enjoyable experience.

Who knows, these hacks may even follow you to on-land hotel rooms.

A cruise should be as stress-free as possible so making sure that everything is planned and packed beforehand is pivotal to having the true trip of a lifetime.
