Being productive starts with getting your computer organized.

If you have a MacBook, you’ve got an incredibly powerful organizational tool at your disposal. It’s easy to misplace files, to lose them in the chaotic void of folders, sub-folders, and sub-sub-folders. And that can make your life much more difficult.

So we’ve got some MacBook tips to help you clean up your computer and organize your files.

1. Organize Everything Into Folders

The easiest way to organize and declutter items on your MacBook to group them into folders.

Folders are very easy to create, and file organization is convenient when you group similar items by project or area of interest. To form a new folder, just select the File dropdown menu in the upper left of your desktop. Select New Folder, and then choose a name for that folder.

You can choose to save the new folder wherever you want: on your desktop screen if you wish, or in another folder or sub-folder. Plus, it’s easy to move new items into the folder, either by the drag-and-drop method or just saving the file in the folder in the first place.

2. Make Use of Stacks

When it comes to MacBook tips for file organization, this is one of the best.

Stacks is a great feature that helps organize your MacBook files in a way that’s less cluttered and hectic. Creating files on your desktop is often the easiest method of MacBook storage; however, this can fill up your home screen quickly.

Stacks organizes similar files, grouping them by certain criteria. To activate Stacks, just click the View menu on your desktop screen, and select Use Stacks. The rest takes care of itself.

3. Use Tags

Don’t forget to put the tags option to good use when you organize and declutter your MacBook.

Tags are perfect for keeping different files and programs color-coded and organized on your computer. All you have to do is launch Finder, right-click the item you wish to tag, and select one of the colored tags.

And while you’re at it, hunt down the source text to find duplicate files and delete them. There’s no need to have extra files hanging around.

4. Create Smart Folders

Yes, there are such things as smart folders. And they’re an excellent way to help organize your MacBook.

A smart folder isn’t really a different folder; it acts more like a saved search. But it does help make certain items easier to locate.

To create a smart folder, click File in the Finder menu, and select New Smart Folder. A search box will prompt you to select a search attribute. Select whichever one you want, and you’re all set.
