5 things remember when you redesign your garden

Everyone wants to keep their home looking fresh and cohesive with the latest trends, and for some people keeping their garden in vogue is as important as the rest of the house. Your garden is by far one of the more versatile and larger areas of your house and it’s great for everything for rest and relaxation, to impromptu gatherings. 1. Review what you already have and what needs changing

Take a look at your current garden and get the old pencil and paper, walk around your garden making a rough 2d floor pan of your garden from a Birdseye perspective. Highlight individual aspects in different colours, green for area’s that work well, yellow for areas that need slight or light adjustment to get them in line with the rest of the design and red for areas which are not working or require a complete overhaul. With this it will be easier to plan, stage and prioritize the work that you need to undertake.

2. Choose your plants

This step is actually slightly more complicated than it first appears. It’s important to note that no matter how well a plant suits the flowers around it, if it is unsuitable for the environment you are planning to use it in, the plant will become unhealthy or make plants around it unhealthy and in turn, it will negatively impact the overall appearance of your garden. Make sure you evaluate a plant’s suitability for an area by considering how much light the area gets, how much space it requires to grow, how it interacts with plants that share its space and what kind of soil type and ph. it thrives in, avoid grouping together by style or colour as more often than not this would spell disaster.

3. Use shrubs to create structure

Using free standing bushes and shrubs can be a great way to add extra depth and additional levels to your garden, while they used to be used almost exclusively by landscapers, gardeners are now starting to see the benefits of having a variety of different plants to add an organic and natural feel to their designs.  And there has never been a greater variety of shades, colors and textures than now; they come at all different levels of maintenance.

4. Lawn

It doesn’t matter how tastefully decorated and gardened your garden is, a terrible looking lawn will almost certainly turn heads for the wrong reasons.
