5 Tips To Help You Get an Automotive Job

As of September of 2021, 911,600 people are working in auto manufacturing and an additional 1,986,400 in automotive retail. The retail sector includes car dealerships, auto parts stores, and tire dealers. These numbers prove that the automotive industry is thriving.

However, like any other industry, not just anyone can make it in the automotive industry. There are certain things employers are looking for. If you don’t prove these traits or skills, it’ll be significantly harder to get a job.

So how can you increase your chances of getting an automotive job? Continue reading to find out.

1. Master Your Specialty

Pick a specialty and learn everything you can in that specific niche. Since this is something you’ll be spending a lot of time on, be sure it’s something you’re passionate about. For example, you may decide to focus on foreign-made vehicles or ultra-specialize in something like transmissions or brakes.

2. Get Some Formal Training

You’re significantly less likely to get a job in the automotive industry if you don’t have formal training. Even if you have a lot of experience, it won’t be easy. However, this article proves it’s never too late to get started.

Formal training could mean attending a technical school, but it doesn’t have to. Formal training can also include getting certifications or attending workshops. Look around to see what’s available near you.

3. Create a LinkedIn Profile

If you aren’t already using LinkedIn, now is the time to create your profile. Not only will it help you network with others in the car industry, but it’ll also let recruiters find you.

Be sure to fill your profile out in its entirety and add any relevant training or experience. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure you list yourself as available and looking for work. This helps your profile show up when companies are looking for positions relevant to your skills.

4. Attend Job Fairs

Job fairs are another great place to network. They’re even better than online networking because meeting someone face-to-face tends to create a stronger bond.

Of course, there’s always the possibility you’ll find a job. But you’ll be expanding your network and getting a better idea of what potential employers want even if you don’t get the position you’re hoping for.

5. Be Patient

It can be frustrating trying to find an automotive job, but try to practice patience. While you continue to find and apply for relevant jobs, continue working on your skillset. Eventually, you’ll find a job you’re genuinely passionate about.
