5 Ways to Be a Safe Driver In 2022

In the United States, fatal vehicle accidents rose 17.5% from the summer of 2019 to last summer. These tragic numbers mark the biggest two-year increase since the 1940s.

It’s more important than ever to know how to be a safe driver. Continue reading for five tips on how to be road safe in 2022.

1. Don’t Speed or Run Red Lights

When driving, maintain a safe speed because fatalities often occur when people disregard the road’s speed limits. Driving faster increases the impact and potential injury if you’re in a crash.

Running red lights is also against the law and there are also grave consequences for one moment of recklessness. In 2019, 846 people died in car accidents due to a failure to obey red lights.

2. Never Drink and Drive

Alcohol, illegal drugs, and, in some cases, prescription drugs can significantly impair your driving ability. NHTSA figures reveal that 10,142 people were killed in drunk driving incidents in 2019.

Never consider driving if you are under the influence, and don’t let an intoxicated friend get behind the wheel either. The tragic consequences are well documented, and you’ll incur severe driving penalties too.

Look here for more information about what you’ll have to do if you’re arrested for driving under the influence.

3. Get to Know Your Vehicle

Understand all the controls of the vehicle before taking it onto the road. Check the manual to learn about the various lights on the dashboard and other helpful information.

You should adjust the driver’s seat to ensure the seat position and steering wheel are in the optimal position. You should also make sure the rear and side-view mirrors offer a complete field of vision around your vehicle.

4. Stay Focused and Distraction-Free

A safe driver is focused at all times. An unfocused driver is unaware of their surroundings and will miss essential cues on the road, such as signs or communication from other drivers.

Distracted driving is unwise, to say the least. Do not attempt to multitask by making calls, sending texts, or checking social media while behind the wheel. If you need to use GPS navigation, put in the address before you set out.

5. Always Wear Your Seatbelt

This should go without saying, but, remarkably, there are people out there who choose not to strap themselves in. Wearing seatbelts saves lives, and the statistics prove it. According to the NHTSA, 47% of speeding drivers in fatal accidents were not wearing seatbelts.

Strive to make seatbelts your first priority as soon as you enter the vehicle. It may seem insignificant, but it could be the difference between life and death.

Be a Safe Driver

And there you have it. Take these five tips on board, and you’ll undoubtedly be a safe driver on the road. Consider taking a drive-safe training course online if you want to know more.
