Your alarm goes off at 7 am. You hit snooze once, twice…just one more time won’t hurt, right? Suddenly you’re leaping out of bed at 8 am, and you have to leave the house at 8:30 am to be at work on time.

This gives you just enough time to throw on some clothes, brush your teeth, and run out the door, hoping you remembered your lunch this time.

We all oversleep every now and then, but when you consistently start the day this way, you’re making a crucial mistake in terms of your productivity, mental health, and overall success. No matter what time your alarm goes off, to have the most productive and positive day possible, you need to start the day off on your terms. You need a morning routine.

1. Drink a Glass of Water

The first thing you should do every morning, before anything else, is to drink a glass of water. After 7-9 hours of sleep, your body is dehydrated. Drinking water first thing in the morning helps to rehydrate and refresh your body after a long night’s rest.

That said, that’s not the only benefit of drinking water. Remember that your body is around 60% water, which means it’s an essential ingredient in virtually every bodily function. Water helps to remove waste, regulate your body temperature, cushion your joints, lower water weight, and much, much more.

If you find it difficult to drink water in the morning, consider placing a glass or water bottle on your nightstand before you go to sleep. That way, all you have to do is reach over and grab it when you wake up.

2. Make Your Bed

Making your bed might seem like a dull, mindless chore, but done first thing in the morning, this habit can have a profound effect on your day-to-day life. This is because the act of making your bed first thing in the morning allows you to start your day productively.

You’re scoring a small win as soon as you wake up, setting you up for more wins throughout the day. Think of making your bed as the beginning of a productivity snowball. It’s a small task that can lead to fulfilling much greater ones down the line.

3. Eat a Healthy Breakfast

Many of us are guilty of running out the door in the morning without a crumb of food in our stomachs. And though you might not realize it, doing so can bring down both your productivity levels and your overall health.

This is why eating a healthy breakfast should be on your list of morning habits. Now, while there’s nothing wrong with treating yourself to pancakes and whipped cream every so often, the keyword here is “healthy”.

Having a banana or apple with a spoonful of peanut butter, an omelet, or a cup of yogurt with mixed berries will give you the energy boost you need to start your day right. Not to mention it will kickstart your metabolism!

4. Practice Mindfulness

It’s so easy to get caught up in the daily grind and forget how wonderful our lives truly are. When you take time out of each day to be mindful and appreciate what you have, even the worst day won’t seem as bad.

5. Get a Workout

We should all be getting at least 150 minutes of exercise per week to reach and maintain optimal health. Broken down, that comes out to 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week, making it a perfect habit to add to your morning routine.

You might love the gym and have enough time to go and still get to work, or start your work at home, on time. But if you don’t, there’s no reason to try to force it into your schedule.

Getting your body moving and your blood pumping is the goal here. So complete a 15-minute yoga session, do a quick workout that you found on YouTube, or go for a walk around your neighborhood. Pick something that you look forward to doing and you’ll never miss a day.

6. Build a Skill

Have you been meaning to practice a foreign language, learn to play an instrument, or dive deeper into your favorite subject, but can’t seem to find the time? Add it to your morning routine!

Set aside 30 minutes every morning for your language app, online guitar lesson, or book on medicinal herbs. Whatever your interests, whatever skills you hope to build, tackle them first thing in the morning.

When you get home from work and find that you’re too tired to practice Italian, you can smile to yourself knowing you’ve already completed your lesson for the day.
