8 Factors to Consider Before Choosing Divorce Lawyers

You and your spouse might not ever think that you’ll need to go through the process of choosing divorce lawyers. But one study after another has shown that anywhere from 40 to 50% of marriages will end in divorce.

With this in mind, there very well could come a time when you find yourself getting a divorce. And if that time ever comes, you’re going to want to have an attorney who has experience with divorce on your side throughout the divorce proceedings.

Choosing a divorce lawyer might seem like a simple enough task when you see all the different options that are out there. But it can actually be a pretty overwhelming process, especially when you’re going through such an emotional time in your life.

It’s why you need to know which factors you should consider prior to bringing an attorney on board to assist you with your divorce. Here are eight factors you should keep in the back of your mind while interviewing different divorce attorneys.

     1. Experience

One of the first things that you’re going to want to look at when you start the process of choosing divorce lawyers is the experience level of each divorce lawyer in your general area. It’s extremely important for you to find a lawyer who has extensive experience when it comes to working with those who are looking to get divorces.

There are well over 1.3 million lawyers operating in the U.S. today. But not all of them are going to have the experience with divorce that you’re chasing.

You should try to track down a lawyer who has been helping people with divorce cases for at least a few years now. But in a perfect world, the lawyer that you end up choosing should have more than a decade worth of experience. It’ll ensure that they’re up for the challenge of representing you in your divorce case.

     2. Expertise

Every divorce case is a little bit different. There are some uncontested divorce cases that are very simple in nature. But there are also some that can get very complicated and messy in a hurry.

The divorce lawyer that you call on to help you should have the expertise that it’s going to take to handle your specific type of divorce case. If, for example, you and/or your soon-to-be-ex-spouse have a very high net worth, your divorce case is going to be different from another divorce case that doesn’t involve much money or assets.

There are also some divorce cases that involve things like:

  • Child support
  • Alimony
  • Domestic abuse
  • Child custody and visitation

The divorce lawyer that you choose to work with should know the best way to go about representing you based on their expertise. If they’ve never worked on a divorce case involving child support and your case centers around it, they’re not going to be a great fit for you.

     3. Reputation

In 2020, people don’t go out to eat at a restaurant or make an appointment at a dentist’s office without reading through a bunch of references and reviews for them first. So why should choosing divorce lawyers be any different?

Prior to picking out one divorce lawyer over all the rest, you should make sure that you see what kind of reputation your preferred lawyer has in your community. You can typically find a long list of reviews for divorce lawyers—and other types of lawyers, for that matter—right online.

Ideally, you should do your best to locate a divorce lawyer in your area who has racked up nothing but the very best reviews over the years. It’ll let you know that they have what it takes to provide you with a great experience while helping you go through the divorce process.

     4. Location

While you’re working your way through the divorce process, you’re going to have a series of meetings with your divorce lawyer. You’re going to meet early and often to go over the different aspects of your divorce and to make sure that you and your lawyer are always on the same page.

As a result, you don’t want to work with a divorce lawyer who works out of an office located 45 minutes from your home. It’s going to make it difficult for you to find the time to meet with them as often as you should.

Instead, you should look for a divorce lawyer in your area with an office that’s easily accessible. You don’t necessarily need to work with a lawyer who works in an office right around the corner from your home. But they should have an office that’s no more than 15 or 20 minutes away.

     5. Personality

As we just alluded to, you and your divorce lawyer are going to spend a lot of time together in the months leading up to your actual divorce. Because of this, you need to make sure that you’re going to be able to get along with them at all times.

Your divorce lawyer needs to have a personality that pairs up nicely with yours. If you’re not a big fan of overbearing and, at times, arrogant people, then the last thing that you’re going to want to do is hire a divorce lawyer who fits this description to a T.

Your goal should be to find a divorce lawyer who has a personality that meshes well with yours. You should be able to tell whether or not they’re going to be the right lawyer for you within the first few minutes of talking to them.

     6. Patience

The divorce process is not a quick process at all. While different state divorce laws will ultimately help to decide exactly how long your divorce will take, it’s not out of the ordinary for divorce cases to stretch out over many months and, in some instances, even years.

For this reason, you need to hitch your wagon to a divorce lawyer who is a very patient person. They need to be willing to stick around for as long as it takes you to get a divorce from your spouse.

They also need to be willing to answer any and all questions that might pop up throughout the course of your divorce proceedings. If your divorce lawyer is always rushing you out of their office or off the phone, it’s often a sign that they’re not patient enough. You need someone who is going to be there for you at all times, no matter what.

     7. Cost

People are often surprised by how much it costs to get a divorce. Although the exact cost is hard to pin down, the average divorce usually costs a person somewhere in the ballpark of $15,000.

That being said, you could pay a whole lot more than that or a whole lot less than that based on your specific circumstances. If, for instance, you’re going through an uncontested divorce, it’ll usually cost less than a contested one would.

The cost of your divorce is also going to depend on which divorce lawyer you hire. It would be a great idea for you to go through the process of comparing lawyer fees so that you can find an attorney who fits into your price range.

By calling around to different lawyers to see what they’ll charge you for their services, you can get some sense of what it’s going to cost you to get divorced.

     8. Availability

You can go through the trouble of finding the best divorce lawyer in your area and pay them a small fortune to represent you in your divorce case. But if that lawyer is also handling a dozen other divorce cases at this time, they might not be able to devote enough time and attention to you.

The divorce lawyer that you hire for your case needs to have more than enough availability for you. They need to be able to spend the right amount of time preparing for your case so that you’re able to get a favorable outcome at the end of it.

If you get the sense that a divorce lawyer is in over their head right now and working way too hard on other divorce cases, you should look for someone who has more time for you. It’ll ensure that you’re able to get the attention that you deserve during your divorce proceedings.

Choosing Divorce Lawyers Doesn’t Have to Be a Huge Challenge for People

Getting a divorce is one of the most stressful and emotional things that you’ll ever do. It’s why you should take the right approach when it comes to choosing a divorce lawyer Barrington IL.

Consider each and every factor listed here when you’re on the hunt for a great divorce lawyer in your city or town. By doing this, it’ll help lead you to the right lawyer for your case and make the process of getting divorced that much easier for you.
