A Basic Introduction To Creating A Floating Garage Storage Shelf

Every American loves to work in their garage. Especially if their fond of doing DIY (Do it your own) projects. Well, the garage area isn’t just where you park the car, but it also serves as a storage area for your equipment and any other tools. These tools include gardening materials, car jacks, rug, wood saws, pumps, etc.

However, the said items sometimes make a mess in the garage. It’s pretty much inevitable having clutter in your garage, which could make your garage disorganized and untidy. It can also be frustrating, especially if you don’t have an area to store all your tools and equipment. This way, having a DIY shelf could be a great help to you in keeping your garage organize and clean.

Do It Your Own Floating Garage Shelves

You can’t hide the fact that it’s pretty much refreshing having a tidy garage area. If you want to maximize your garage’s space, you need to have DIY floating garage shelves. This is also applicable if you are working on your garage most of your time. When creating garage shelves, one thing you should keep in mind is the material you’re using.

Although garage shelves can also be made of metal, it isn’t advisable. One disadvantage of having a metal floating shelf is that it could create pressure on your wall, resulting in unexpected damage. If you want to build floating shelves, wood is the best material to be used.

Making garage storage shelves might not be complicated for you, but these shelves are a special kind of storage medium. Like any other floating garage shelf, the wood is screwed into the wall to support its weight. There are also things you need to consider when creating a floating garage shelf, and the spaces between the woods may depend on what items you wanted to place in it. So, here are some of the primary steps you need to take note of.

Selecting the Right Material

The first thing you need to consider is the type of material you wanted to use. It’s up to you if you’re going to use metal or wood. But if you’re going to create the best storage shelf, then wood could be the perfect material for it. Currently, there are three types of wood that you can use in creating a storage shelf.

You may want to consider using softwood, plywood, or hardwood. If you want a sturdy and durable storage shelf that could last long, then hardwood is the best choice. Once you’ve selected the most suitable material, you also need to find your project’s required tools. These tools include carpenter’s pencil, tape measure, screwdriver, carpenter’s square, chalk line, and hand saw.

Measure and Plan

Once your materials are ready, you need to plan first before you start the DIY project. So the first thing to do and keep in mind is the right measurements for the garage storage shelves. By using your measuring tape, you need to start measuring the length from your ceiling to the first shelf. The usual distance of the first shelf to the ceiling could be more or less around 12 inches.

It’s really up to you on how you wanted to measure the first shelf from the ceiling. Remember, you need to create extra space from your ceiling to your storage shelf so that it wouldn’t look too high or too near to the top. Once you’re done measuring the length from your first shelf to the ceiling, you also need to measure the height or the spaces between the shelves.

Take note of what items you need to store so that you’ll have the right measurement on each shelf. It would help if you also remembered that the higher the height, the fewer the shelves, and the lower the height, the more shelves you need to create. Lastly, you need to place a significant space between the floor and the shelf.

Takeaway

Creating garage storage shelves can sometimes be overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time doing it. There are many things to consider, such as time, effort, materials, tools, and any necessary equipment in creating the storage shelves. But fear not. As long as you have a plan and a guide, you will most likely produce the most suitable garage storage shelf.
