Are Metal Storage Sheds Hard to Maintain? A Closer Look

Over the last couple of years, there’s been a 400% increase in interest over having a shed.

Sheds offer a lot of options to homeowners, from storage for vehicles to workspaces. Metal storage sheds come together in every way imaginable. Whatever your needs are, a metal storage shed can meet them, but how difficult is it to keep a metal shed functional and nice?

Let’s take a look at how hard it is to maintain a metal shed.

Metal Storage Shed Maintenance

Metal storage sheds are popular, with the other choices being wood and vinyl. Metal sheds are often preferred because they are more durable and require less maintenance than the other types of sheds. Wood sheds are vulnerable to environmental factors and vinyl isn’t as tough as metal.

A storage shed comes from the factory with the metal already painted. As long as this paint stays on the pieces of metal, there is little need to do anything else. An occasional inspection of the shed will reveal any troubles it is having, and you can address them.

Over time the exposure to water and weather paint will begin to blister and flake off. If this happens to your shed the place it will start is often down where the shed meets the ground. The lower parts of the shed get exposed to the most water from dew, rain, and lawn watering.

For most sheds, this process will take years, but when it happens you have to be ready to act. All you need to do is to paint the bottom again, reapplying outdoor paint so that it will be durable and long-lasting. This will prevent rust and oxidation from occurring that could damage your metal shed.

If your shed already has damage, such as rust spots they aren’t difficult to remove. Most of the time it requires only a little sanding or rust removal and then painting the area to remove rust damage. Failing to do so in a timely fashion can cause permanent damage to the shed.

Separation is possible, as the ground can shift and settle as can the structure. If this happens you’ll see splits begin to appear in the walls or even the ceiling of the shed. This is far more common in sheds that are old, newer sheds don’t separate unless something is wrong.

People of all backgrounds have and use metal storage sheds. They are easy to handle and don’t require a lot of work or care on your part. This makes them easy to use, easy to erect, and easy to maintain, don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.

Knowledge and Tools

It doesn’t require a lot of knowledge or tools to upkeep storage sheds. A paintbrush is enough to do most of the work, but you should always be aware of the size and type of connections you have. You may have to tighten a fastener at some point, you shouldn’t get surprised, damage occurs due to severe weather, for instance.

Often when damage does occur it doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. If the metal shed breaks to a point where repairs are unfeasible, you can always throw it away. In the worst-case scenario, getting another shed isn’t difficult.

You also don’t need a lot of knowledge about the construction of carpentry to take care of your metal shed. They are self-explanatory and if you have one installed the manual it comes with will give you a basic rundown of the maintenance you can expect to do. It is straightforward and easy to keep a metal shed intact.

Advantages over Wood and Vinyl

Metal sheds have a number of advantages, but the main one is durability. Wood and vinyl can both crack if they are hit hard, it takes more force to break metal than wood or vinyl. Wood and vinyl can even be damaged by normal means, such as a lawnmower throwing a rock against the side of the shed.

Given how much work goes on in backyards, this makes a metal shed the natural choice. Whether you’re using it as a shed for lawn mower or to house tools, a metal shed keeps things safe and secure. It also prevents the elements and weather from damaging your property.

As long as they are kept painted and the rust removed right away, a metal shed will last forever. Wood won’t, as over time even maintained wood can become the subject of dry rot. Tiny cracks and fissures can appear from wear and tear with vinyl.

Any weakness in the walls or roof of your shed only invites more damage. Instead of wasting a ton of money trying to upkeep a vinyl or woodshed, or repair it, you should consider metal. Metal requires little maintenance compared to wood, and it is harder to damage than vinyl.

Installation

Putting up a metal fence may seem like a daunting task because there are a lot of pieces. The reality is that a professional installer is able to throw up a metal shed fast. There isn’t much need to set aside or waste a lot of time when it comes to putting in a shed.

Installation and maintenance are both areas where metal sheds shine against their competitors. Don’t waste time and money on something that isn’t going to last. A metal shed is easy to put up and easy to take care of, which is why they are the most popular choice for storage sheds in the United States.
