Benefits of Dentures Over Implants

Benefits of Dentures Over Implants

If you are wondering about the best method to replace missing teeth, two of the most popular solutions are dentures and implants. But which one is better? Well, if you are looking to discover the benefits of dentures over implants, you are in the right place!

Of course, in the majority of cases, the choice is highly subjective, and some people would argue the benefits of dental implants over dentures. Both have advantages and disadvantages, and here, we will explain some of the most common reasons why people prefer dentures.

Dentures

Dentures are designed as a replacement for missing teeth. There are many different types of dentures available, but they share the same idea. In the majority of cases, dentures are used to replace more than one missing tooth, and they are attached to natural teeth. You can also find versions used when the majority of teeth are missing.

Two main types of dentures are partial and full dentures, and choosing the right one is mostly based on the number of missing teeth. The main characteristic of dentures is that they are removable, and you will take them out when you go to bed.

To ensure that you get a fitting denture, the dentist will measure your jaw and create dentures specifically for you, ensuring that they are a perfect fit.

Implants

While the idea behind dental implants is the same, the basic principle on which they operate is different. Namely, implants are designed to be a permanent solution. You can’t just put them on or remove them as you want. Placing implants requires a dental procedure, and it takes time for the process to be over.

Naturally, there are many different types of implants. You can also replace a single tooth or all of them. As long as there is enough support in the jaw bone, getting implants shouldn’t be a problem. Dentures and implants are the most popular and most common tooth replacement options, and the only thing you should do is decide which one is the best for you.

It is also possible to find a combination of dentures and implants, with implants serving as a foundation for the dentures. A typical example is implant-supported overdenture, which uses implants instead of natural teeth to stay in place. Implant overdentures are common for patients that miss more (or all) teeth, and the implant will prevent slipping. Of course, if the patient has natural teeth, a tooth-supported overdenture is a great alternative, in which case there won’t be any need for implants.

Benefits of Dentures

Of course, everything has its own pros and cons. And there are numerous reasons why someone would choose dentures over implants. For example, traditional dentures are a lot cheaper. For many people, that alone will be a deciding factor. Everyone would love to have a perfect smile, but if we are looking only at the price tag, dentures are a better option.

The installation process is also significantly simpler, and it doesn’t require surgeries or healing. As soon as you get them made for you, you can put them on and enjoy having a beautiful smile. Furthermore, dentures can look quite natural, and if you are worried about aesthetics, this is still a great option. The dentures often look as good as real teeth, and they will make your face appear fuller and healthier.

Another great advantage of dentures is that maintenance is simple, and in the majority of cases, rinsing them under water will be enough.

Benefits of Implants

Now, saying that one is better than the other wouldn’t be correct. Both implants and dentures have advantages and various benefits. One of the primary benefits of implants is that they are a long-term solution. You can’t remove implants, and they are quite durable. Additionally, implants look like real teeth, and they feel a lot more natural compared to dentures.

If you are looking for a permanent solution, implants are the way to go. Maintenance is still simple, and all you need to do is brush and floss as with natural teeth. When it comes to types of food, you can eat anything. There are no types you should avoid, and it’s perfectly safe to eat something that’s sticky or crunchy.

Adjusting to implants is fairly quick, and well-made implants will never affect your speech. In fact, it will feel like you have natural teeth. While some people might need a couple of days or weeks to get used to them, it will become normal.

Why Go for Dentures Over Implants

If you start learning more about these two methods, the first thing you will notice is that dentures are so much cheaper. In fact, not many people can afford implants. While they are a permanent solution, it is still out of reach for many. But even if the cost of implants is not a problem, there are several other reasons why someone might prefer conventional dentures.

Once your dentures are ready, all you need to do is put them on, and you’ll be good to go. Implants require a lot more time to finish. At the same time, the surgery required sounds quite scary for many people, and they’d prefer a non-invasive alternative. As you probably know already, the most common dentures have a screw that’s placed in the jaw, and the implant or fake tooth is mounted on top of the screw.

The person going through the procedure will need time to heal since it is necessary for the body to heal before the process is finished. Placing dentures is non-invasive. It doesn’t require surgery or drilling, and there is no healing since the body is not affected.

Furthermore, installing dentures requires a strong jaw bone. If the patient experiences bone loss, the dentist will first need to ensure that the jaw is strong enough before they proceed to make implants. That often includes bone grafting, which will only delay the process even further. Dentures are a simpler solution that could be ready in no time. So, if you are looking for a convenient, simple, and quick solution, regular dentures will do the trick.
