Can You Send Your Dog Away to Be Trained?

Training is an integral part of being a dog parent, and the best part is that you can start it at any age. It strengthens the bond between you and your dog, builds confidence, and helps provide the mental stimulation your dog needs to grow. But, for pet parents to achieve this level of training on their own can be difficult, and they may need to attend private canine training in Los Angeles.

However, most dog owners still wonder if it is a good idea to send their dogs away for training. The answer to this question depends on the dog’s experience and your circumstances. But, for you to understand if you can send your dog away for training, it is crucial to understand what’s involved.

What Happens When You Take Your Dog for Training?

When your puppy arrives at the dog camp, the first thing that happens is spending a few days familiarizing themselves with the environment. One familiarization activity is sleeping in the kennels available at the training center.

The next step is training your dog. Your dog will have at least two or three training sessions every day. The number of sessions they get depends on how quickly they pick up the training. Sometimes you’ll have one trainer complete the training, but, depending on how large the establishment is, your dog may be trained by more than one individual.

How Long Does it Take to Train Your Dog Away from Home?

The average time it takes to train your dog thoroughly away from home is several months. However, the duration they spend in residential training is primarily determined by the outcome you and the trainer desire. It will also depend on your dog’s problems or bad habits and the specialty training they require.

What are the Pros of Sending Your Dog Away for Training?

Some benefits that come with sending your dog away for training include:

Delegation

A training facility allows you to delegate the responsibility of training your dog, especially if you don’t know-how.

Specialized Training

For dogs that require specialized training for a particular sport or mission, away from home training is essential. This type of training allows the trainer and the dog to give all their attention to the task at hand.

Disadvantages of Sending Your Dog Away

One major disadvantage of sending your dog away is that it can destroy your dog’s relationship and bond with you. Your dog needs to understand how to communicate with you in and out of your home. By sending your dog away, you deny them that opportunity.

Another disadvantage is that sending your dog away makes it easy for them to establish a relationship with the trainer. Unfortunately, that affection doesn’t automatically transfer to you.

Obedience training is as much for the parent as it is for the dog. It would help if you also learned how to articulate the commands. By learning how to communicate commands, training your dog becomes a walk in the park. Lastly, it costs more compared to other forms of training.

What Makes Private Training Different from Sending Your Dog Away?

With the disadvantages significantly outweighing the advantages of sending your dog away, more dog owners opt for private training instead. This form of training has proved to be effective, as it allows dog parents to undergo training together with their dogs. Other benefits that come from this type of training include:

  • Personalized Training. This form of dog training allows the trainer to interact with your dog in the environment they are most comfortable. And in such an environment, your dog’s attention goes into the training they receive.
  • As a dog owner, you get to learn and practice together with your dog. It makes the entire training impactful and fun for both you and your dog.
  • Private dog training allows you to become more engaged in the training your dog receives. In the process, you get to learn a lot more about how to train your dog. With this knowledge, you can advise other dog owners whenever they need help.

What Does My Dog Learn During Private Training?

A dog trainer teaches your dog set behaviors that are specifically tailored to their home environment. This form of training also helps your dog learn how to deal with wild and cranky behavioral issues. As a dog owner, you also get to learn post-training commands that help make your dog’s transition easier.

Sending your dog away for training works, but it does have limitations. If this isn’t an option for you, there’s always the option of private lessons.
