CBD for Sleep: Here’s What You Need To Know

Nothing can be as refreshing as a good night’s sleep that makes one wake up fresh and ready for the day. But sadly, an unhealthy lifestyle, stress, underlying medical conditions, and more can cause insomnia and restless sleep, which can be a huge dampener to the quality of life.

The National Institute of Health says that about 30 percent of the population suffers from some disruptive sleep disorders. While for some people, a change in lifestyle and mindful practices can help get back their good sleep, others need extra help to relax. And there are indeed various types of medications and therapies available to treat sleeping disorders, including CBD, the recent phenomenon in the healthcare industry.

Learn more about this non-psychoactive cannabinoid compound that promotes better sleep.

Does CBD Help With Insomnia

CBD stands for cannabinoid, which is one of the active ingredients of cannabis. Unlike TCH, CBD does not evoke any feeling of high or addictive tendencies and is approved by the FDA for use in the treatment of epilepsy.

It is commonly used as a plant extracted oil from hemp or weed.

The little research available on CBD usage suggests that it can be effectively used to treat chronic pain, anxiety and insomnia. This is because it reacts with the CBD1 and CBD2 receptors in the body, which are an integral part of emotion and mood regulation.

Common causes of sleeplessness like anxiety, PTSD and chronic pain can all be treated with CBD usage, making it a good alternative to existing SSRI medications.

Several researchers, too, have proven the relaxation abilities of CBD. A 2019 study on oral CBD consumption of 25 mg dosage proved that a significant percentage of patients experienced lowered anxiety levels and better sleep with CBD.

Another research from 2014 on Parkinson’s patients states that CBD was effective in improving REM sleep.

When To Take CBD For Insomnia

While there is no conclusive research on sleeping patterns and CBD, many believe it to be an effective alternative as it tackles most of the root causes of insomnia.

CBD can be consumed in different methods:

  • Vaping
  • Oils and tinctures
  • Oral pills
  • Edibles

The right dosage and time of CD will depend on various factors like sleeping patterns, weight, existing medical conditions, and any medications that one takes.

It may take about a month to start seeing the effects of CBD for insomnia once starting to consume it.

How Much CBD To Take For Sleep

As CBD products are available in various forms and sizes, users will have to pay attention to the actual net weight of CBD that is consumed. Look at the milligrams per serving and consume accordingly.

Users should consider the factors like age, sex, weight, the reason for CBD consumption, diet, sleeping patterns, and so on.

Generally, it is advised that one start with a low dosage of 25 mg per day and move on to higher dosages as per the effects of the experience. If users cannot know the exact quantity in milligrams, as would be the case with oils, try to calculate an approximate CBD level with each drop of the oil. For instance, if the bottle contains 500 mg of CBD in total and has a 10 mL capacity, each drop of 0.5 ml will have 2.5 mg of CBD.

Consult with one’s doctor and make sure not to accidentally mix any harmful drug or diet interactions as CBD is consumed.
