There are different types of automotive wiring that you can use when trying to complete your car assembly project. For many car enthusiasts, putting together or restoring an old vehicle is a common hobby. However, before starting your very own build, it’s important to be equipped with the proper knowledge and understanding of the different types of parts and components. Since the wiring system of a car is composed of multitudinous bits and pieces, it’s essential that you install each and every one of them properly to avoid any risk of system failure especially when you’re taking your ride for a spin on the road.

The automotive wiring in a vehicle is distributed throughout its internal parts. It is responsible for carrying out and transmitting the electrical signals necessary for each component to function properly. If improper wiring is installed, then it can prove to be detrimental to the system as a whole. Classifying the type of wire to use is typically done while planning the assembly. Different wires serve different purposes and are made specifically for the type of application. It is also important to note that the wires you’ll find in your home are not suitable for any vehicle since it is not as durable and cannot handle vibrations, extreme temperatures, and chemical exposure as efficiently than those you would find in a car.

Common Types of Automotive Wiring

Before we discuss the common classifications of automotive wiring, it’s important to remember that investing in good-quality wires is always the ideal choice. There may be plenty of wires that you can find online that are sold cheap but they are often not of the best quality. When manufacturers fabricate these low-grade wires, they often make them using aluminum with a thin coat of copper. And though aluminum is a lightweight conductor, if the application requires a high amount of voltage, it might not be able to withstand the load since it’s only 60% as conductive as pure copper wires.

Battery Wires- Understandably, battery cables or wires are used to connect the electrical system of the car to the battery. It is typically larger and heavier than other automotive wirings. However, it’s always important to always check the well-being of your battery system as these types of wires are prone to external elements and corrosion.

GPT Wire- Considered as low-voltage primary wires, GPT wires are general-purpose automotive wirings. It is typically made with PVC insulated material that is wrapped around a multi-stranded core. It is resistant to acid, oil, and other chemicals and has a temperature range of -45°C up to 85°C.

SXL Wire- Another type of primary automotive conductor, SXL wires are normally made of copper and crosslinked-polyurethane insulating material. They are typically used in engine compartments and have a temperature rating of -51°C to 125°C.

1015 Hook-Up Wire- These types of automotive wiring are usually made of finer strands of wire that are insulated using PVC. It can also be used for electronic and appliance applications and can handle higher voltages. It has a temperature rating of 80, 90, and 105°C.
