ED Drug may treat Alzheimer’s Disease

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get or maintain an erection. It’s a common condition among men. Alzheimer’s, on the other hand, is a brain disease that leads to memory loss and thinking difficulties. While ED has many treatments today, the same cannot be said for Alzheimer’s. However, this might be about to change. Erectile dysfunction (ED) has been greatly researched in the past decade, and that research has not only helped men have a healthier intimate life but is now also beginning to help in other ways. There are promising signs that Generic Viagra (also Branded Viagra) may help treat or prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Cheap Viagra is widely available now, and hence the findings of its impact on Alzheimer’s is great news for many people.

ED Drugs

There are many kinds of ED drugs, from Viagra (Branded or Generic Sildenafil), Tadalafil, Spedra, Generic Cialis, to Levitra.

Most cases of ED are caused by a lack of blood to the penis, and this can be due to many reasons, such as underlying chronic health issues. ED drugs stimulate more blood flow all over the body, including the penis, thus alleviating erection related issues. Due to this very property of ED drugs, they are also prescribed to patients with pulmonary hypertension. Studies have shown how ED drugs may be a viable treatment for other conditions as well, such as vascular dementia, which is a disease that occurs when reduced blood flow damages the brain and Alzheimers. As an extension of these findings, there are indications that ED drugs may act against Alzheimer’s disease — a type of dementia.

Latest Research

In a study published in the journal Nature Aging, researchers from the University of Cleveland (USA) suggest that sildenafil — sold under the brand name Viagra — could be prescribed to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

Memory disorders such as vascular dimension and Alzheimers are caused by the accumulation of toxic proteins such as amyloid and tau proteins. ED drugs such as sildenafil can target these toxic proteins and prevent them from amassing in the brain.

The researchers at the university used a large gene mapping network to find that in a sample of 7.23 million people, sildenafil users were  69% less likely to develop Alzheimer disease than non-sildenafil users after 6 years of follow-up. Sildenafil was also more effective than the 1600 other drugs that were analysed.

These are very promising results, but a definitive judgement is yet to be made.

The jury is still out

More research is needed, and it is no surprise that the FDA has not yet approved Viagra (Sildenafil) for Alzheimer’s treatment. However, if the current trajectory holds, it might not be too far.

According to Researchers, they have only established an association between ED drugs and reduced chance of Alzheimer’s. They will now begin the next phase of research in the form of a randomised controlled clinical trial, which will seek to determine any causality.

Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia are faced by millions of people all over the world. So far, with our current treatments, we have only been able to slow down such brain diseases, but we may be on the precipice of a massive breakthrough that will improve the lives of people all across the world.

What next?

As we wait to know more, the current status of ED drugs does not change. If you are experiencing erectile dysfunction, you should not hold back from seeing a doctor and getting a prescription. You may then buy generic viagra or another suitable ED drug, based on the doctor’s recommendation.

ED drugs have helped countless men overcome their erectile issues and allowed them to live more fulfilling lives. This benefit will not go away, regardless of future findings related to Alzheimer’s disease. If things do indeed turn out as we hope, it will be a huge added benefit; but if not, drugs like Viagra still remain nothing short of remarkable.
