After completing and getting awarded their medical degree, internists will be required to partake in a residency program. The Internal medicine residency program will help the newly trained medics to get hands-on skills.

The duration of the Internal Medicine residency program tends to vary depending on the country. In the United States of America, the program can run at least for three years. It may be longer depending on the specialization.

During the first year of residency, the internists need to pass a medical licensing examination. Upon completing their 3-year residency program, an internist can further their education and become experts in a specific organ. Or they could further their education in the field of research and earn their Ph.D.
