Frugal Ways To Keep Your Swimming Pool Warm This Autumn

How many times have you wanted a warm swim in the pool after a long day at work to calm down and relax? For people, especially in colder regions, swimming in a warm pool is a wonderful feeling.

However, it is not a feeling that comes cheap! Amongst the many considerations, one of the primary ones is twofold.

First, you want to heat it as efficiently as possible, and lastly, you want the pool to remain heated for as long as possible.

This means that the amount of heat your pool loses can be a significant factor in understanding its energy requirements and ascertaining the cost.

Most people prefer very efficient and sophisticated technology such as a pool enclosure and heater in the pools.

However, since every pool environment is different, its energy needs and the temperature conditions can vary. Therefore, you might even have to consider the energy types and rates prevalent in your area.

For example, due to deregulation, New Jersey Electricity Rates depend on what kind of electricity is availed. This is because a vast majority of the electricity is powered by either nuclear power or natural gas.

Essentially, who caters to your energy requirements is the bigger question there. In such cases, depending on the prevalent conditions in your area, the prices may either come down or skyrocket.

Based on different conditions, here are some tips to save cost and energy while heating your pool this autumn.

Pool Insulation

Whenever you plan to get a pool in your yard – even if you plan to rework it – keep the insulation in mind.

Any pool design, be it a natural pool or a swimming pond, can benefit from certain rigid panel insulation surrounding the structure and under it.

It saves costs as well as electricity consumption. What’s more, the heating is far quicker and easier this way.

Due to multiple panels under and around the pool, the water gets heated easily and swiftly. Therefore, the faster it heats-up, the less energy it will consume and require even less time.

The ambient ground temperature in the US is low and not perfect for a swim. So, external panels surrounding the water-holding structure can be a great help.

Pool Location

Another issue while planning a pool is trying to figure out where it can receive passive heating.

A pool in an open space where it receives plenty of sunlight is an excellent idea in this regard. This way, such a pool can receive some passive solar heating – called insolation.

However, it may not be the most useful idea to have a pool in an area prone to the wind. This is because wind decreases the surface temperature and is also responsible for heat loss due to evaporation.

Therefore, the optimum location and size of the pool should be determined by these conditions, which shield it. This significantly downsizes the cost and energy consumption levels.

Choosing The Right Time To Heat

Most people tend to heat their pools late at noon, which many experts believe is quite sensible! Are you aware of why?

This is because setting a timer to run your Heat Pump Pool Heater (HPPH) around noon lowers the energy consumption levels.

The pool remains heated for long because the HPPH heating is complemented by the insolation process, i.e., solar heat. This means that you have to operate that pump for a short duration and let nature take care of the rest.

This is also an energy-efficient process because it maximizes the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of the pump and dramatically increases its energy efficiency.

Furthermore, since the heating process is using insolation, the water gets heated much faster and quicker. During noon, the air temperature is on the higher end; therefore, not much heat is lost due to evaporation.

This makes sure that the water remains heated for a longer duration, without requiring any further energy input.

Solar Heating Panels

You can find different types of solar pool heaters, depending on their energy, efficiency, and cost. The best idea is to understand which features apply to your needs and which aren’t pertinent.

Another essential factor of consideration is your nature of usage, based on which you can select the right solar panel.

Since solar pool heaters are made of different materials, your intention to use it will determine the optimum selection. For example, if you use it sparingly in above freezing conditions, you’ll need an unglazed collector.

These unglazed collectors come in cheap parts and therefore are comparatively less priced. Furthermore, you can use them in indoor pools in a cold climate.

Since they are made of heavy-duty plastic or rubber treated with a UV light inhibitor, they tend to last longer. They are called unglazed because of the absence of glass covering, making it even more durable.

Pool Covers

One of the significant factors of heating a pool is energy consumption. How much energy your pool uses determines your power costs.

A key factor that results in increased energy consumption is evaporation. Evaporation not only reduces surface temperature, but it also causes rapid loss of hit.

Therefore, your average HPPH has to work twice the rate to heat the water. Due to excessive running and lower COP, it tends to consume more energy and, therefore, increases costs.

A simple pool cover can preserve the heat by preventing surface evaporation and decreasing COP due to heat run-off.

There are multiple techniques on offer in the market, but investing in a pool cover is easily one of the most cost-effective and practical ones.

Conclusion

Keeping your pool warm during the fall can be a challenge with high Dallas Electricity Rates. But ultimately, simple and easy energy consumption techniques can create a difference in the long run.

The objective should always be to save energy that will inevitably save costs. However, most people who look at it conversely end up spending more money on electricity than they save.

It is, therefore, essential to prioritize right and not be penny wise and pound foolish! With these frugal pool heating tips, you will notice a massive difference in your annual energy bill.
