Grab 5k Balipermatasaribloomberg: Bali’s DENPASAR ALAM clinic is set to be the first of a new network of GRAB vaccination counters popping up in Indonesia, to help eradicate polio, hepatitis and other life-threatening diseases from the country.
In Bali alone, GRAB will be setting up five stands where people can get vaccinated for free. And it will be free for drivers too — on weekdays between 8am and 1pm they’ll have 4G internet connection available while they wait their turn at the stand.
“We will be starting with the Bali center and I hope that within the next year we can have a similar GRAB vaccination service in every other major city in Indonesia,” said Melinda Soeparno, co-founder of GRAB.
It’s a bold move from the ride-hailing service that plans to roll out 200 new services in Indonesia over the next year — things like fresh food deliveries, car washes and even game centers.
“I want to be the biggest tech company in Indonesia,” Soeparno said. “We want to be the most Indonesian company in Indonesia. Every year I want to launch at least 200 services, which means every month I want to roll out 10-15 things for our users.”
GRAB is one of the fastest growing startups in Southeast Asia, having recently raised a $350 million Series E round led by Google and Tencent.
It’s also among the hottest of the new Indonesian tech startups, with investors such as Alibaba’s Jack Ma, SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son and Foxconn — all eyeing a rising middle class in Asia.
But the company is already punching well above its weight — with 170 million rides so far, GRAB is now in pole position to become Indonesia’s largest ride-hailing service.
“We are the largest in terms of rides and we are the biggest app in Indonesia,” said Zennia Fogorodibon, the company’s chief investment officer. “So to achieve our vision — to become the largest tech firm — we have a lot of work to do. But it’s going by fast. This year we’re also growing our revenue at around 3-4% which is faster than any other Indonesian company growing at 2-3%.”
GRAB operates in over 35 countries, including Indonesia and India, but the company’s biggest business is outside of Asia. It plans to launch GRABGo in Pakistan, Cambodia and Myanmar next year — with attention also being paid to its other global ambitions.
“We’re trying to do everything fast — so we will be launching five global services by 2017,” said Soeparno. “We want to become a global player in everything.”
For Bali, the new GRAB vaccination centers will be set up in areas including Udayana University, and on the island’s main street Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai.
“If anyone wants to get a vaccination from us, we will go to them. We’re starting with a simple center and then we’re rolling out more complex ones every year,” said Soeparno. “And we’re also testing whether we can roll out something like a drive-through service — where you can get vaccinated and get back on the street. This is a great service because it relieves pressure from busy hospitals.”
The company also plans to roll out free vaccination centers for other diseases in South East Asia and Africa. Since November 2014, GRAB has been running free vaccination services at its Jalan Bypass clinic, which sees around 400 patients a week. “We have no problems, we receive almost no complaints. We’re very happy with the response and the feedback,” Soeparno said.
But despite their confidence on the company’s growth strategy, GRAB does acknowledge there is still a long way to go.
“In Indonesia there are still so many people who don’t know about this service and I think it will take a few more years for all of them to adopt this service,” she added.
