Grinding away: how to grind your herb for beginners

You may be used to cutting or finger chopping your herb. However, you may have noticed that this doesn’t produce a fine enough herb to enjoy from the likes of a vape, and have decided to step up your game by picking up a first class, top draw herb grinder.

But you don’t just pick up a new grinder add expect it to do the job with ease: like many other aspects of herb smoking you need to do the job properly!

So, grab your brand new herb grinder, and, of course, grab your herb – we’re going to take a beginner’s look at how to get the finest, smoothest smoke out of your herb through the use of a quality grinder.

Step 1: Loading your grinder the right way

Obviously, the first step towards grinding your herb is loading the herb grinder. This being said, you can’t just go throwing large amounts of herb in there and expecting the grinder to churn out a fine material – you have to break down those larger herb nugs into smaller pieces so that the grinder can do its thing with ease.

Next, try to distribute the herb evenly across the grinder so that it doesn’t get blocked in particular teeth. When this happens, it fails to grind the herb down into a nice enough material, so be sure to distribute that herb evenly across the grinder.

Step 2: Your first time grind

Once you have packed the herb and closed the grinder’s lid (being sure to do it so that the magnetic centre fits in place), you can then start to give your herb grinder a good few twists, just like you were opening a can or a bottle top. This being said, you want to do it in a nice, gentle and smooth fashion, so that you don’t potentially damage your grinder.

You might feel some resistance to your grinding, but this shouldn’t be too much of a problem if you were able to correctly break down the nugs into smaller, highly manageable pieces. You will then go on to work in your grinder and understand it in a way that ensures you know just how many twists you need to get a good, smoothe herb.

Step 3: Entering the next chamber

You need to access the compartment of a three-chamber grinder as this holds the ground up herb. To do this, you want to grip the grinder’s base and use your remaining hand to remove the top two portions using that similar lid-opening technique.

Once you’ve got into that third chamber you can then pour out the resulting mix and smoke it as desired.

Extra step: Using your kief catcher

The above three steps are the simple way to get a nice, clean smooth herb. However, you can also access the kief catcher in a similar manner to removing the upper two portions of the grinder.

Once you have removed the kief catcher it is really simple to retrieve the herb from it: all you have to do is sprinkle the remaining herb out of the catcher or scrape it off with a tool. This remaining herb can be used to add to your vape or bong and is a really nice fine seasoning.

See, using a quality herb grinder is the easiest way to get the smoothest consistency and the best smoke out of your herb – all you have to do is follow the above steps.
