What Are Green number plates?

UK Green number plates are different from other number plates because they have the green stripe on the side to indicate that it’s an electric vehicle. Green number plates are a recent addition to the UK. Green number plates are available for anyone who owns an electric vehicle. Green number plates have been introduced, as well as a multi-million-pound investment in electric vehicle research that will help the UK reach a zero-emission future sooner.

Green number plates are expected to be introduced in the autumn, according to plans for a green economic recovery, which were confirmed today by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps (16 June 2020).

The government’s aim of net-zero emissions by 2050 will be aided by the introduction of green number plates, which will encourage motorists to replace their cars with electric vehicles. The plates will assist local governments in creating and implementing new policies to incentivize people to buy and drive zero-emission vehicles.

The report, which will be published in the coming days, makes reference to such concepts as parking cost savings and reduced charges for public transits. For example, drivers may benefit from local projects like cheaper parking and free access into zero-emission zones where people with a green number plate will be identified as eligible.

The plates will have a green flash on the left side and will be limited to zero-emission vehicles.

Following a public consultation, the Department for Transport has decided to introduce green number plates in the UK.

To further promote the government’s objective of achieving a green recovery, £12 million in funding for cutting-edge research into the zero-emission market will be made available to advance greener vehicles and help improve vehicle charging technology.

Green Plates will Benefit EV Drivers

On December 8th, the left-hand side of new zero-emission car number plates will feature a green flash. The plates will assist in the identification of completely electric cars from those with petrol or diesel engines. The plates are not necessary; drivers may opt for normal plates instead.

However, new green number plates may provide significant financial incentives to eco-friendly drivers. The easily identifiable plates will give drivers access to local authority programs such as free EV-only parking and zero-emissions zone access.

The London congestion charge zone already offers a 100 per cent discount on low-emission vehicles, but it will change in 2019 to only apply to all-electric or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. In Canada, a similar scheme gives EV drivers free access to highway tolls and priority traffic lanes, which may be implemented in the UK.

The British Number Plate Manufacturers Association claims that the Department for Transport and the Office for Low Emission Vehicles have given their approval for the plates to be used and that they can be retrofitted to existing electric automobiles as long as they produce no CO2 emissions.

Identifying EVs Will Help to Drive the Green Economy

The £10 million would be used to create the commemorative plates, which are expected to carry a message regarding environmental sustainability. If you choose to purchase one of these plates, it will not only commemorate your loved one’s life but also help the government reach its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. He added.

“Green number plates could unlock a number of incentives for drivers and increase awareness of cleaner vehicles on our roads, showing people that a greener transport future is within our grasp.”

In a poll by the AA, 37 per cent of motorists said that electric vehicles should be distinguished from conventional internal combustion engine cars. The plates, according to a RAC spokesperson, may become a “badge of pride” for some drivers and may cause animosity among current petrol and diesel vehicle drivers.

In general, the green plates are regarded as a good initiative that may encourage individuals to switch to clean-energy cars.
