How Can I Improve My Home Security?

Security systems have greatly evolved over the past few decades and become smart and modern. Whether you consider security cameras or smart locks, there are so many different ways for you to ensure that no intruder can break into your home.

Not only does it help you feel safe when you are at home, but it also ensures that you have peace of mind when you are miles away. Here are some tips and methods you can implement to improve your home security.

  • Always Hide Your Valuables

Burglars look for while scouting homes to rob the presence of valuables and expensive objects, such as your new car, new TV, antique furniture, expensive paintings, etc. One looks through the window, and they will immediately decide to move in.

Therefore, keep your valuables away from plain sight as much as possible. This includes parking your car in the garage at night or keeping the windows and blinds closed so they can’t take a peek. The harder they have to try to see what they can steal, the less interested they will be.

  • Stop Keeping Your Key Under the Mat

Of course, you might not still keep your key under the mat, but you might think you are smart enough to hide it in plain sight. You aren’t that smart, and experienced burglars know that you might hide a key each and every place.

If you are worried about losing your main keys and not being able to enter the house, get yourself a smart door lock that can open from your thumb impression, alphanumeric code, or key fob. You won’t have to keep the key anywhere outside the house.

  • Never Give the Impression of an Empty House

Generally, when people leave their homes for longer periods, they turn off all the lights and appliances, leaving only the front door lights on. While that is a smart and energy-saving tip, it gives burglars a chance to break in. To ensure that your home doesn’t look empty, you can have your neighbors or a friend collect your mail and drop in from time to time to turn on the lights and make the house look inhabited.

Also, you can install smart lights around the house, which can be programmed to turn on and off according to a schedule. Moreover, you can invest in a video doorbell, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be a Ring doorbell.

We all know that burglars have found a way to circumvent them. Here is some good alternative to ringing the doorbell for you to consider. These devices will instantly alert you if they detect any motion close to your front door, and you can immediately inform the authorities.

  • Don’t Overprotect Your Home

One common mistake by homeowners is that they try to fortify their homes with tall shrubbery or fences, thinking that these would keep burglars away. These methods hide them from the neighborhood as they try to break the lock or climb in through the window. The more visible your house will be to the neighborhood, the more difficult it will be for burglars to break in.

  • Change Any Doors with Glass Near the Locks

Several doors are designed and embellished with beautiful glass pieces, making them stand out. However, if the glass is closer to the handle or locks, burglars can easily break the glass and unlock the door, whether or not you are home. So, if any of your front or back doors are made this way, maybe you should consider changing them.

  • Install Motion-Activated Lights

If you are willing to go the extra mile to protect your house, consider investing in motion-activated lights, which quickly turn on when they detect any movement in their radius. Installing them around the perimeter of your home will ensure that even if a burglar tries to come closer to one of your doors or windows, they will be deterred by the lights and flee in fear of getting caught.

  • Protect Your Second Floor as Well

Simply installing extra locks on your house’s front and back doors is never enough, especially when you have an extra floor. The additional floor may also have several entry points that you might leave unguarded, such as the windows, gallery door, attic window, etc.

You can protect all of them with the help of motion sensors, smart door locks, and other modern equipment. Also, use smart lights and schedule them to turn off and on when you aren’t home, so burglars think there is someone in the house.

To Summarize…

This is all we have for you on improving your home security. Even if you implement all of the tips and methods we have highlighted here, the most important thing is to think like a criminal and act accordingly. If you don’t give them an easy target, they would never consider robbing your home.
