How to choose a mattress that will be comfortable to sleep on

A good mattress is not an inexpensive purchase, but its quality determines not only the comfort of rest, but also health. The right mattress can be a reliable help in getting rid of insomnia, muscle and spine pain, and allergic diseases. Providing yourself a comfortable and healthy sleep, it is easier to cope with a sense of constant fatigue and irritability.

Before you start looking for a mattress in the store, you need to know how to choose it correctly. And this is not as easy as it may seem at first glance – you should take into account not only your personal preferences and the size of the bed, but also many other factors.

What mattresses are available

In any furniture store you will be offered dozens of mattresses for all tastes and wallets. How to choose a mattress so that it really helps the body to relax for many years?

Classification of mattresses by the type of construction

The quality of the mattress largely depends on its “stuffing”. Most often springs are hidden under the upholstery, but they also vary. And some models do not contain springs, their elasticity is provided by other materials.

Spring mattresses

Spring mattresses are available with dependent and independent springs. In the first case, the springs are intertwined with each other in a certain way, while in the second case, each spring is in a separate fabric “cup”. Mattresses with independent blocks are more comfortable because the springs, isolated from each other, better adjust to the shape of the body. 256 springs per square meter is the standard for most mattresses of this type. This number of springs makes the mattress very comfortable.

Springless mattresses

Springless mattresses are a block of artificial or natural latex, coconut fiber, and a variety of synthetic high-tech materials. Inflatable and water mattresses also belong to the non-spring mattresses.

Types of mattresses depending on the filling material

If everything is more or less clear with springs, the variety of fillings can be confusing – there are so many materials. And while some are used since our grandparents, others have appeared quite recently, and the average buyer knows little about them.

Latex. A natural material that is elastic, hypoallergenic and anatomical. Latex is also hygienic and provides good support for the spine.

Coconut coir. It is a flexible, firm and hypoallergenic material that has high bactericidal properties and is used as a filler for hard mattresses.

Polyurethane foam. A material that is characterized by high elasticity, good breathability and hypoallergenic.

Memory Foam, or highly elastic material with memory effect. Hypoallergenic high-tech mattress filler based on polyurethane – strong, reliable and durable. It is a viscoelastic foam, the cells of which resemble small springs, which shrink under the influence of body weight.

Memory Latex. It is a honeycomb structure and transpiring and is not affected by temperature changes. It is a very durable material.

Viscoelastic foam. This innovative and hypoallergenic material has a memory effect and ensures the most natural position of the spinal column, without impeding the normal blood circulation during rest.

Sisal. Natural fiber with high antistatic properties, capable of easily passing air and evaporating the moisture released by the person during sleep. Extremely durable material, designed to withstand intensive loads.

This is not a complete list of mattress fillers. Felt, horsehair and natural wool, latex with various additives, string-fiber and other materials – both natural and synthetic – are also used in the manufacture of mattresses.

Double-sided and single-sided mattresses

Most mattresses available in stores are one-sided, but some companies specializing in the production of orthopedic mattresses offer two-sided models. In these mattresses the sides can have different rigidity and different types of coating. For example, double-sided mattresses for different seasons have a wool layer on the “winter” side and a softer filler to keep warm, while the “summer” side is covered with a hygroscopic fabric and provides good air exchange during the hot season.

Orthopedic mattresses

They are designed to provide optimal support to the spine. Such a mattress can follow the contours of the body of the person resting on it, preventing numbness in the limbs and other types of discomfort. Those who suffer from spinal pain, as well as those who have ligament and joint diseases, an orthopedic mattress is essential. And for healthy people a quality orthopedic mattress will be an excellent prevention of back problems.

Note!

Special attention should be paid to bilateral anatomical orthopedic mattresses with the possibility of oscillatory massage. Such mattresses are more than just a sleeping appliance. The massage mechanism built into them creates controlled alternating vibrations, which provides a relaxing effect.

Which mattress to choose

The main criterion for choosing a mattress is personal preference, but you should also consider other things, such as your weight and age, as well as your state of health.

Consider height, weight and age

Obese people prefer hard mattresses, thin people prefer soft models, for example with independent springs or latex padding. People of average build can usually sleep comfortably on any mattress.

Age is also very important: for older people, doctors do not recommend sleeping on mattresses with high degrees of hardness, as this can cause problems with the spine and circulation. Choosing a mattress for a child is somewhat more difficult. Children of primary school age and adolescents are usually recommended rigid non-spring mattresses, such as those made from synthetic foam materials. A child mattress should be firm, because it is likely to be used for jumping and playing. When choosing a mattress for very young children the main criterion will be hygroscopicity. The ideal option would be a mattress 3-7 cm thick, filled with coconut fiber.

The best mattress for two is a model of medium hardness with independent springs. If one of the sleepers often turns over in his sleep or gets up, the second half of the mattress remains unchanged.

The mattress should not be too short, but it is even more important that it corresponds to the size of the bed base and is not hanging over the edge. It is easy to calculate the size of the mattress, its length should be at least 20 cm more than your height. The width of a single mattress is usually from 80 cm, the width of a double one – from 160 cm.

Health considerations

Natural materials are environmentally friendly and have a fairly long life, but many of them are contraindicated to allergic people, so if you belong to their number, it is recommended to give preference to mattresses made of synthetic materials.

People with lumbar spine problems should choose soft models that provide good support for the lower back. Mattresses of medium hardness should be considered by people with problems in the thoracic spine. Hard mattresses are more suitable for those who suffer from upper back pain and osteochondrosis, as well as for those who would like to improve posture.

To make the purchase of a mattress really useful and profitable, it is important to choose a responsible seller. If the company provides a warranty on its products – this is a definite indicator of quality.
