How to Choose the Best Headstones for Your Loved Ones

When a loved one passes away, we’re left with sorrow in our hearts. This emptiness might not ever be completely filled again, but as time goes on, we learn to carry it. After losing a loved one, the grieving process begins.

Although we want to spend our time simply grieving our loved ones, there’s much to still be done. Now is the time to plan the funeral services and choose the best headstones. With so many different headstone options, it can feel overwhelming at times.

In the guide below, you’ll find a headstone buying guide. Continue reading below to make choosing a headstone a bit easier on you. Here’s what you need to know.

A Ledger Marker

A ledger marker will cover your loved one’s entire grave. It’s a slab of stone that stretches from one end of the grave to the other. These markers can be up to eight inches thick and can even cover more than one grave if you have multiple loved ones buried next to one another.

This is a beautiful option and gives you plenty of space for inscriptions.

A Statue Monument

A statue monument is a headstone that’s either a statue itself or has a statue connected to it. You can find some great examples at SuperNova International. These monuments allow you to choose between different granite colors and statue figures.

Consider what would be the most cherished option of your loved one and then choose that statue for them. For example, you can choose an angel leaning on the headstone or crying over the top of it. You can choose a tree, lighthouse, teddy bear, or even a dolphin statue as well.

It’s always ideal to think of your loved ones and what they would choose from themselves if they could.

Flat Markers

Flat markers are either rectangle or square-shaped and can come in granite or bronze material. These headstones lie flat on the ground as their name suggests. When you walk up to your loved one’s grave, you’ll find the flat marker at lawn level.

Some flat markers also provide a small vase for you to place flowers in.

Upright Headstones

Upright headstones are one of the most common types of headstones. These are the headstones that stand upright at the front of the grave. The base is wide and supports a table structure.

You can find upright headstones in a variety of sizes, shapes, and other designs.

Headstone Materials

When choosing your headstone, you will have the option to choose between a variety of headstone materials. Some options include bronze, granite, marble, and slate. The two most popular options are granite and bronze because of their durability.

When choosing granite, you’ll also be able to decide on a color. Granite comes in many different colors, like blue, red, and green.
