How To Design Small Kitchens

Designing small kitchens can feel impossible. A kitchen is where you do all your meal prep and spend a lot of your time. You need space to cook and bake. That is why we put together a few ideas to help plan a kitchen that inspires you, even if it is small.

Add A Prep Area

Is your kitchen too small to include an island or an extended countertop? No problem. Just add in a slim rolling kitchen cart that can be placed anywhere you need it in the kitchen necessities. It will act as a spot to get all your ingredients together or simply somewhere to set that extra bowl down.

Add A Compact Dish Rack

Don’t have room for a dishwasher? That’s okay, doing dishes the old-fashioned way isn’t that bad as long as you don’t have to dry them right away. Simply add in a compact dish rack that fits within your sink, allowing you to save counter space and not soak said counter in water.

You can also consider building cabinets directly above the sink that act as a dish rack. These types of cabinets hold dishes upright like a rack would and allow them to dry while being “put away.” Once you are done washing dishes, just open the cabinet door, set them in all nice and wet, and close the door until you need them again!

Use Light Colors

The lighter the colors you use, the larger your space will feel. Use light colors on your:

• Countertops
• Backsplashes
• Walls
• Millwork

Also, consider making your cooking tools light as well. Such as your cutting board or pots and pans.

Use Your Vertical Space

In a small kitchen, floor and countertop space is limited. So, the only place to go is up!

Install pot racks, knife mounts, and open shelving on your walls to provide more storage area for all your kitchen essentials.

Add A Rug

A good kitchen rug can make your kitchen feel more cohesive and therefore larger. Opt for natural colors that bring warmth to your kitchen. You will be surprised at how much better your small kitchen will look and feel.
