How to Easily Replace Damaged Commercial Wallcoverings in 6 Steps

Commercial wallcoverings are meant to withstand the basic wear and tear often associated with high traffic areas, but with that small damages can and usually will happen over time. A wall may fall victim to a harsh chemical, a stain or a physical tear, but you needn’t worry! Replacing a section of damaged wallpaper isn’t as difficult as it may seem.

Tools That You’ll Need

  • Replacement piece of commercial wallpaper
  • Utility Knife
  • Wallcovering Sponge
  • Wallcovering Paste
  • Plastic Wallcovering Smoother

Step 1

Track down a piece of matching commercial wallcovering. Maybe you have some leftover from the initial installation process, but if not, you can also try contacting the original place you purchased your wallcovering from. Most commercial wallpaper shops do sell small amounts of wallcovering specifically for repairs.

Step 2

Figure out how the original wallcovering was applied. Many popular commercial brands like Koroseal and Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines, come with an adhesive already applied onto the back. If it’s not already applied, spread a thin layer of wallcovering paste onto it.

Step 3

Once you’ve lined up the pattern of the new piece of wallcovering with that of the wall, press it firmly into place and wait a few minutes for it to properly adhere.

Step 4

Now that the wallcovering is set, take your utility knife and cut an even square inside the new patch, making sure it’s still larger than the damaged area. It’s helpful to use something straight like the edges of your wallcovering smoother or a ruler to run the tip of your knife along and achieve nice clean lines on both layers. Once you’re done cutting, it’s time to remove the surrounding excess pieces of wallcovering as well as the new patch.

Step 5

Next you can remove the damaged commercial wallpaper. Use the tip of your knife to gently get underneath the corner of the affected wallcovering and slowly peel if off. If its being stubborn, you can take a damp sponge to loosen up the glue and help it come off smoother.

Step 6

Now you’re ready to apply the fresh new wallcovering! Take your new patch and firmly place it in the empty space. Once you’ve taken your damp sponge to smooth it out, you should be good to go with your newly repaired wall!

Commercial wallcoverings are made to last; but on the off chance they experience an accident and result in being damaged, It’s not the end of the world. If your commercial wallcovering is caught with a casualty, just follow these simple steps and your wall will look as good as new again.
