How to Fix a Computer That Won’t Turn On

Humans produce around 50 million tonnes of e-waste every year. Quite often, we throw out things that only had minor issues. If your computer doesn’t turn on, you might be tempted to throw in the towel and simply buy a new one.

So, what should you do to fix your computer?

Here are a few tips on how to fix a computer that won’t turn on you need to try.

Make Sure It’s Turned On

If your computer won’t start, make sure you check everything is properly turned on. There are probably several different switches that could be off. While this might seem obvious, you’d be surprised how often this is the problem.

For example, maybe you plug your computer into a power strip. Make sure this hasn’t accidentally been switched off. There’s usually a power switch on the back of the computer on desktop computers. Make sure this hasn’t been switched off as well.

Check Your Display

When your computer won’t startup, it’s only natural that you think the computer is to blame. In some cases, it might actually be a problem with your display monitor rather than the computer itself.

Listen to the sound of your PC. If you can hear the fans running, it suggests it might be a display issue. Make sure your monitor has power, and make sure your HDMI cable hasn’t come unplugged from the back of the computer.

Check Your Hardware Devices

In some cases, a device attached to the computer might be why the computer won’t start. For example, if you have an external USB device connected, such as a webcam, try disconnecting it and seeing if the computer will start. Adding new hardware to your system, such as a new hard drive, could also prevent your PC from starting up.

Your computer’s power supply can only handle a certain amount of devices. If you exceed the limits of your power supply by adding too many components, the machine won’t boot.

Listen For the Beeps

Finally, you should listen to the beeps the computer makes when you try to turn it on. The pattern of these beeps isn’t random. It actually communicates different kinds of technical problems.

Check out your computer’s documentation to determine exactly what the beeps mean. Usually, the beeps will indicate a specific component that’s malfunctioning, enabling you or a computer repair shop to fix the problem.
