How to frame embroidery?

The versatility of embroidery never stops surprising us. From Asian heavy embroidery work to modern embroidery patches on shirts, jeans and hats, the colorful thread designs are love! Professional embroidery machines have made intricate designs easy, and professional embroidery is quite famous these days.

Apart from machine embroidery, there are other ways to stitch with your garments, like crewel embroidery. Crewel embroidery is a traditional way to stitch, which dates back to the medieval century. An embroidery pattern doesn’t need to make your garments beautiful only.  You can always frame your embroidery piece and display it on walls.

Framing an embroidery project looks like an intimidating project, and many people think it a difficult task. It is the opposite – all you need is few necessary items and a proper way to display your magnificent embroidery project.

Learning about how to frame embroidery is neither complicated nor impossible because we are here to teach you all in this concise article. A few essential items and little efforts will turn your embroidery design into a marvelous masterpiece.

So let’s get started:

Materials you need:

  • Completed embroidery design:

First of all, you need to have your finished masterpiece. Your embroidery piece should be washed and properly pressed. The fabric should be big enough to fill into the frame, and there must be extra garment from around two to three inches. Extra fabric is necessary as you need to wrap it around the back of the display.

Few people love to trim the fabric according to the design as it makes embroidery stitches easy. But, if you are looking forward to hanging it on the wall, then spare few inches. If you are doing your project using one of the prominent embroidery machines, then make sure that the design pattern is set correctly in the right place.

  • Frame:

First of all, you need a picture frame that is the right fit according to your embroidery designs. I do not prefer glass picture frames as they do not look good aesthetically to me. Here I will describe the same; furthermore, glass frame is not a good practical choice. A glass frame can harm embroidery stitches over time. If you are using glass frames, choose the deep shadow box so the embroidery does not touch the glass surface.

  • Miscellaneous items

You may need few cotton threads and few push pins to keep it intact.

  • Foam Board:

Last but not least, you need a foam board that is cut according to inside frame dimensions. You may need to cut the board around 1/8, smaller than the inside, because the embroidery project will be wrapped around it.

You can also buy small fit size foam boards from the local shops for frames and pictures. These trim pieces are remnants of big boards.

Process:

Once all the items are gathered in one place, it is time to start. Here the steps to follow:

  • Position the foam board into the centre of your embroidery project. Make sure it is straight and centered correctly. Once done, flip it over, so the garment is on the bottom level.
  • Start folding the long sides of the fabric and fold the extra garment into the centre.
  • If you find that fabric is too extra, then trim it and leave space around one to four inches.
  • Pull the fabric with a firm grip and secure it by pushing the push pins into the board.
  • Repeat the same process on short sides of the fabric.
  • You may fold the corners diagonally and trim them according to your frame size and design. Fit the snuggly corners of fabric inside the frame but make sure that it does not create a bunch at the back.
  • Now flip back and make sure it is the centre and straight.
  • After that, stitch the fabric on the back with the traditional lacing method. Finish the process by folding the garment at the back and lace all short sides together.
  • Remove the push pins and fit your piece into the frame.
  • Flip it back and hang it on the wall.

Conclusion:

Professional embroidery machines are quite helpful to create embroidery masterpiece. With the help of these tips, you can hang your masterpiece and get praised by everyone.
