How to Get a Job in Construction With No Experience

With over 745,000 employers, the construction industry is a booming workforce to enter. But you might be wondering if it’s possible to land a job without construction experience. Fortunately, we have you covered.

Stay with us to learn how to get a job in construction with no experience!

Take Construction Courses at a Local College

One of the best routes to construction jobs is through your local community college. Many technical or community colleges offer certificate programs. These can fast-track you to a well-paying construction job.

You can learn from industry professionals and gain a certificate in masonry or carpentry. And you’ll get access to job boards and internships in the process.

Within just a few months, you could have the necessary experience to score a job in carpentry or remodeling. You’ll learn anything from how to read blueprints to how to frame a wall. And, of course, you’ll learn the necessary safety information to avoid injuries.

Gain Construction Experience with an Apprenticeship

Ideally, you’ll want to get some hands-on experience before you enter a construction site as a full-time worker. You can look for apprenticeships, where you work directly with a more experienced carpenter or manager. In fact, a certificate program might require this as part of getting certified.

You can look for temp work, too, to help build your experience and comfort with the work environment. For example, you can work as a general laborer and help with set-up on construction sites. You also may help with painting, nailing, or other basic skills.

For these positions, you might only need a GED or high school degree to qualify. And many of these temp jobs can translate into more permanent work if you show yourself to be a committed worker. You might even be able to get on-the-job training for more skilled positions.

Find an Entry Level Construction Job

Through your coursework or apprenticeship program, you may be able to find job leads. Being able to point to a certificate or an associate’s degree can open doors to the best construction jobs.

Just make sure you’ve taken the time to construct a resume, too. You’ll want to highlight any relevant experience, even if you’ve only helped out with a friend’s project. And share your educational and volunteer experiences.

Share other job experiences, too, since they can showcase intangible skills. For instance, hanging onto a job for a few years indicates that you’re reliable and committed. List strong references, such as teachers or previous supervisors, who will vouch for your character!

Finally, practice your pitch. When you interview, you want to be an eager candidate who is ready to grow with the company. Talk about what motivates you and what you’re hoping to learn.

Pursue a Job in Construction

A job in construction offers a meaningful way to earn an income — and there’s always room to move up the payscale. Focus on getting the necessary certifications and apprenticeship experience that will build your construction resume. Then focus your energy on landing a job with opportunities for promotion.
