How to Get Rid of Mold on your Drywall

If you are a homeowner, then you will most likely experience mold in your surroundings at some point. It is a nuisance that you will want to get rid of fast.

Mold usually festers in kitchens, basements, bathrooms, laundry units and other rooms that are prone to heavy moisture or humidity. The most ideal environments for mold to grow have little ventilation, high temperatures, and damp air. You should inspect your walls in these types of areas regularly to check if there are any growing spores.

While quite common, it is nothing to be intensely frightened about because mold can easily and quickly be removed. Here are the best tips for removing mold from your drywall.

Removing mold from a painted drywall

Step 1: The first step to removing mold from your painted drywall is to choose the right cleaning agent. You can choose a traditional household item that will help clear the outbreak. Some of the solutions you can try are:

  • Vinegar: Mix water with equal amounts of vinegar to get a more powerful cleanser. This cleanser is safe and you can use it around your pets and children.
  • Baking soda: Mix five-parts water and one-part baking soda to get a mild, but safe solution that works well.
  • Bleach: Mixing three-parts water and one-part bleach will give you a potent solution which you can use on the unfavorable mold.
  • Detergents: You can use dish or laundry detergent as it is. You can use them safely around pets and children in your home.

Now, pour your favorite solution into a spray bottle and then mix the solution by shaking the bottle until blended well.

Step 2: Wear gloves and a mask to protect yourself from germs. Also. move out the furniture and set up a drop cloth to protect the room before you begin spraying the mold on the drywall.

Step 3: Spray the solution on the mold directly. Do not overspray. Otherwise, you might oversaturate the area and cause damage to the paint and drywall. After spraying, scrub the area carefully with a soft bristle brush. Lastly, pat the area with a rag or towel until dry. If a new coat of paint is needed, do the job yourself or call on the services of a professional painting company.

Removing mold from your unfinished drywall

Step 1: The first step to removing mold from any unfinished drywall is to protect and secure the mold-infested area. Protect yourself too. Remove any valuable item away from the area and then proceed by laying down a floor covering. Wear gloves and a mask.

Step 2: Replace the drywall if necessary. (If not, follow the same steps as laid out above for removing mold from painted walls.) Draw a square around that mold-infested area with a pencil. Following your lines, use a jab to cut out that compromised drywall. While doing so, avoid water pipes, electric wires, and any other valuable items that might get damaged by slicing. Install a new piece of drywall using screws, drills, and wood.

If you don’t feel comfortable attempting to cut out and replace the drywall, we recommend using a professional contractor, like Erie, PA Drywall Services.
