How to Increase Your Self Esteem

In simple terms, self-esteem is a term that relates to your personal view of yourself and your abilities, as well as what others think of you. Some people have very high self-esteem, while others are living with very low self-esteem, which can lead to the likes of depression and anxiety. You may be able to detect some of the things that care causing you to feel this way, but sometimes, it can be in our subconscious, and cannot quite put your finger on. In this guide, we are going to list some of the ways you may be able to increase your self-esteem and give you that boost you need:

Be Nice to Yourself

When you are feeling bad about yourself and your body, it’s natural to tell yourself that you’re not good enough, however, that negative voice in your head may be one of the leading causes of your poor self-esteem. With this in mind, it’s important to speak to yourself as though you would talk to your best friend – would you put you degrade them as you are doing to yourself? Of course not! Take care of yourself for a change and give yourself some self-love.

Build a Support Network

One of the reasons why you may be suffering from poor self-esteem is because you haven’t got a support network around you, to give you that lift you need when you’re feeling down. However, this does not mean that you cannot source others to speak to. There are several helplines you can ring if you feel the need to talk about your concerns and feelings with someone and there are also many groups and forums you can join online with those who are in a similar position to you.

Change Your Appearance

If you’re feeling particularly unconfident in your appearance, there’s no reason why you couldn’t make a few small changes to give you a much-needed self-esteem boost – especially if something is bothering you. In doing so, you will give yourself a newfound identity without completely altering who you are as an individual. For example, changing your hair or even switching wearing glasses to one day contact lenses are just a few small adjustments that are sure to make a world of difference in how you feel about your appearance.

Identify What You’re Good At

It is extremely easy to concentrate on the things you cannot do – but what about the things you are good at? You may have a talent that others would wish to have, but you simply are not focusing on that because you believe there are far many other things you cannot do. This is the wrong attitude to take. Instead, you should be concentrating on your strengths and aiming to develop them. For example, if you consider yourself a good dancer, attend a dance class, or if you are a good cook, you should make an effort to host more dinner parties to experiment with new recipes.
