1.  Report Taxable Gross Weight Increase

You need to file an amended return and pay the tax due if the taxable gross weight of your vehicle has increased, putting your vehicle in a new weight category.

Your vehicle’s taxable gross weight will increase if there is an increase in the maximum load customarily carried on your vehicle. In such cases, you must report the additional tax for the rest of the tax period using a form 2290 amended return.

The form 2290 amended return must be filed by the last day of the month following the month in which your vehicle’s taxable gross weight increased.

2.  Report Increase in Mileage

If the mileage use of your heavy vehicle exceeds the 5,000 miles limit (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles), you need to file an amended return. The mileage use limit refers to the total mileage a vehicle covers when it is on the road, irrespective of who drove it.
