You need to file an amended return and pay the tax due if the taxable gross weight of your vehicle has increased, putting your vehicle in a new weight category.
Your vehicle’s taxable gross weight will increase if there is an increase in the maximum load customarily carried on your vehicle. In such cases, you must report the additional tax for the rest of the tax period using a form 2290 amended return.
The form 2290 amended return must be filed by the last day of the month following the month in which your vehicle’s taxable gross weight increased.
If the mileage use of your heavy vehicle exceeds the 5,000 miles limit (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles), you need to file an amended return. The mileage use limit refers to the total mileage a vehicle covers when it is on the road, irrespective of who drove it.
For example, if you crossed your vehicle’s mileage limit in September, you need to file an amended return by the last day of October.
After submitting the amended return, you will get an IRS stamped Form 2290 Schedule 1 copy via mail.
If you have previously filed your form 2290 with an incorrect VIN number, you must file again with the correct VIN using an amended return. In case of amended returns for VIN correction, the vehicle’s tax must have already been paid with the original 2290 form.
As soon as you submit your form, you will receive your new IRS stamped Schedule 1 copy.
You can file an amended return by logging into your e-file service platform that you had previously filed your form 2290 with:
Filing an amended return manually involves the same steps as filing your 2290 return. The only additional step is to check the ‘Amended Return’ box on top of your form while filling out the form.
But you should check the box only under two conditions:
For VIN correction, you need to check a separate box that says “VIN correction”. Once you have entered and reviewed all the informed, you need to mail the amended form it to the below address:
