HOW TO PREVENT WATER DAMAGE

Water seeping into the roof is one of the biggest problems in roofing. Water damage hits the very foundation of a house thus weakening it severely. Preventing water damage is cheaper than paying for repairs. Water seeping into the roof can be a bigger problem than you think. It is the number one culprit that weakens the strength of a house. It should be fixed before the next rainfall. Therefore water damage should be immediately dealt with by calling a professional roofer like Stamford Roofers. They are great at investigating damages to the roof and fixing it professionally.

By using the strategies listed below, you can try and prevent water damage.

     1. REPLACE MISSING SHINGLES

If you notice shingle debris in your yard or downspout splash blocks or notice off-colored patches on the roof then they are the signs of roof leakage. It means that some shingles are cracked or missing. They should be immediately fixed. If there is only little damage than you can fix it yourself or you can always call a roofing professional for help.

     2. CLEAN GUTTERS

Gutters are very essential as they are the exit points of water. So, if they are blocked with leaves’ debris, nest, trees’ branches then they will fail to fulfill their purpose. Therefore make sure they are properly cleaned before the rainy season. Also, make sure that the downspout is cleaned and is extended at least 1.8m away from the foundation of your house. If not, this can seriously damage the core strength of the house as water will seep into the foundations of your house. Also, make sure that water does not flow towards your house, it should be directed towards the street or backyard.

     3. FIX PONDING SURFACE

Ponding on the roof can be very dangerous as it makes the roof vulnerable and prone to rot which causes problems including leak. So, if you notice ponds of water on your roof than they should be immediately dealt with. Calling a roofing professional can be a wise decision as they will fix the ponding issue professionally. If you live near Stamford than roofers near Stamford ct can fix your problems professionally.

     4. INSPECT FLASHING AROUND CHIMNEYS, VENTS, VALLEYS, PIPES

Any joint in the roof can be subjected to leaks. Unfortunately, there are some joints that can not go anywhere like punctures for the roof’s vent, pipes, or chimneys. punctures are also made to install skylights or solar panels on the roof.

These punctures, joints, or openings are filled with a flexible metal called flashing. If this flashing becomes rusted or loses its seal than it can cause leaks. Therefore, flashings should be inspected properly.

     5. REMOVE ICE BUILDUP DURING HEAVY RAINFALL

Ice dams can cause issues. Ice dams are formed typically after a snowfall when the interior of the house is warm and the heat rises to melt the snow on the roof. This melted snow when goes towards the cold edges of the roof, it refreezes which in result causes the gutter to clog and the escape of water is halted. Therefore, always remove ice buildup immediately after every snowfall.
