How to Protect Your Outdoor Furniture This Fall and Winter

It is important that you protect your outdoor furniture this fall and winter because furniture is an investment. Cold and wet winter weather can damage furniture that is left out unprotected, even making it unusable next season. In order to prevent this from happening, take some simple steps to protect outdoor furniture as soon as fall and winter weather sets in.

These are some of the easiest ways to protect the outdoor furniture you own.

Store Your Outdoor Furniture

One of the best ways to protect your outdoor furniture in the cold weather seasons is to store it in a safe dry place. If you have extra space in your garage, a yard shed, or any other sheltered space where your outdoor yard furniture can be stored, make room towards the end of summer for the furniture.

Depending on the size and amount of furniture it might be difficult to store it all, but there are some types of furniture that should be prioritized. Any furniture that is made of or includes parts with fabric, wood, or another material that will swell or break when it gets wet. This furniture should be brought inside and stored for the winter.

Cover Your Outdoor Furniture

One of the easiest ways to protect the outdoor furniture in your yard this fall and winter is to simply cover it with a tarp or other waterproof container. When you do not have any available space indoors or a storage space, a large tarp can be used to provide protection to furniture that has been stacked up for the winter. Tarps are incredibly durable, large, and can be found at most stores for an affordable price.

Before purchasing a tarp or any other large waterproof cover, take the time to stack and secure the furniture that needs protecting. Once the furniture has been stacked, purchase a cover that is large enough to go over the top of the furniture and down the sides. Use ties, bands, or other devices to secure the tarps down so that the tarps do not come off in the wind that is common during the fall months.

Use Custom Made Furniture Containers

If you can’t stick furniture indoors, the second best option is the place or store it in custom made containers. Many outdoor furniture companies will make covers, containers, and other storage units that will hold the furniture they create. This means that the outdoor furniture is in a tight fitting and waterproof container, protecting it from the cold and wet weather that you see during fall and winter.

Turn Furniture Upside Down

At the very least you can turn any outdoor furniture that is going to remain outside upside down. A simple flip of furniture can at the very least protect furniture. Any time there is the possibility of water or snow sitting on the surface of your furniture for a prolonged period of time there is the possibility it can be damaged. For the best results, flip and stack furniture in a sheltered space where any moisture will naturally runoff if it does land on it.

Winterizing your furniture is easy and fast to do once you have determined which option is best for you and your home. Whatever you decide on, make sure that the furniture and the equipment being used to secure it is secure and won’t come loose as the months wear on. Consider what type of furniture you have and what pieces need to be prioritized in order to protect what will become damaged faster in the weather.
