How To Stay Safe On The Road After A Heavy Drinking Session

Out on a night out with friends, family, or work colleagues and things can quickly get out of control. That one drink you planned to have with your meal turned into several drinks. After drinking so much you suddenly remember you drove to your destination earlier in the evening, so, what do you do – Do you risk driving while heavily over the alcohol limit, do you try and sleep it off, maybe even in your car? Do you get some caffeine in your system and then risk driving or do you simply call a cab or get somebody who has not been drinking to drive you home.

Should You Drink And Drive?

The right answer is of course not to drink and drive. There is no point in risking your life or the lives of those on the road by trying to drive especially after a heavy drinking session. As stated by a Pasadena drunk driving accident attorney, drunk driving is one of the major causes of car accidents. If you were to risk driving you would more than likely end up needing the services of a legal professional who would try their best to help you as much as they could, but ultimately they can only do so much, and you would be accountable as you were behind the wheel.

How You Can Stay Safe After Drinking Large Amounts

To ensure your safety and those around you here are some tips to stay safe after a drinking session.

Keep Your Mobile Phone Close

Keep your mobile phone on you, and make sure it is working and fully charged. Having access to a working and fully functional phone is essential, especially if you are involved in an accident or in an altercation.

Call A Cab

Don’t attempt to drive. If you have driven, then give your car keys to a sober friend, or better yet leave them at home and take a cab or Uber, especially if you know you will be drinking large quantities.

Eat Before You Drink

Eat regularly. Try and eat before you start drinking, and then eat little and often while drinking. Drinking on an empty stomach is a recipe for disaster, ensure you eat food that will help absorb the alcohol you are consuming.

Invite A Friend

Tag along with a friend, family member, or work colleague. After drinking a large amount of alcohol you lose your sense of reality and your fear of danger, so stay with large groups if possible, or at the very least with another person. Staying in the company of others will ensure you do not get yourself into any mishaps.

Rest For A While

Take time to recover. After drinking, your body and mind need time to recover. Don’t try and do too much, or you will be left feeling frustrated, sick, and possibly in an accident, especially if you try driving the morning after a heavy night of drinking.

Stay Away From Strangers

Don’t take lifts or offers of assistance from strangers. Some people may be genuine and full of good intent, but there are of course people that will have ulterior motives. Whether you are male or female you are vulnerable, especially after drinking. Just say no to offers that sound too good to be true.

No Walking

Don’t try and walk if off. Trying to walk off your alcohol intake is not something you should attempt to do. Thinking that the fresh air will do you any good will potentially lead you to more harm. The worst-case scenario is – when you are drunk and walking in the dark you could potentially walk into oncoming traffic. Share rides and lifts as and where you can with people you know. Organizing transport in advance to a night out is one of the most sensible things you can do.

Find A Place To Stay

Stay overnight. If at all possible it is wise to arrange overnight accommodation near or at the place where you will be drinking.

Seat Belts

Wear a safety belt. When traveling in a car, safety should always come first. It is essential to always wear a safety belt, even if the journey is very short.

Bring Extra Money

Ensure you have enough cash on you. Don’t go around with huge amounts of cash in your wallet but make sure you have some change should you need to use a payphone in an emergency.

Drinking can be fun, but when you are drinking large amounts the fun has probably already stopped. Once the fun has stopped, it’s time to think of your safety and the safety of those around you. Don’t ever drink and drive, even if you think you will never get caught, the consequences could be severe for you, your passengers, or other users of the road. Penalties and fines, injuries, medical bills, and possibly even death should be enough to put you off ever getting behind the wheel of a car after having a drink.
