How to Tell if Your Dog Needs a New Friend

Did you know a study was published in 2021 comparing the mental health of U.S. dog owners to potential dog owners, specifically under the weight of the pandemic? The study found that dog owners felt they had significantly more social support and were less depressed than potential owners.

It’s only natural that owners want to extend that kindness and companionship to their dogs. However, the language barrier makes it tricky to tell if your dog needs a new friend.

How can you tell if your dog is the one who needs more social support? Should you just adopt a dog and see how it goes?

Keep reading below to learn some of the signs that your dog may want a new friend.

They’re Eager to Share

It’s hard to know what to expect when you have another dog visit your home for the first time. Will your dog behave, or will they become possessive and act out?

If your dog seems eager to show off and share his toys and home with a visiting dog, there’s a good chance they’d be happy to have a permanent new doggie resident to share their goodies with, too.

They Seem Lethargic

Did you adopt a dog who was lively at the shelter, only to bring them home and discover they’ve become more reserved? Like people, some dogs need constant companionship and stimulation to recharge and feel energized.

This approach can also apply to elderly or rescue dogs. If they seem distant and lethargic, a new puppy can give them a reason to act as a mentor and play pal.

So, if you’ve been eyeing that Chiweenie for adoption at your local pet shelter, see if you can schedule a meeting between the two dogs to gauge their personality compatibility.

They Love Going to Dog Parks

We know that most dogs love going to the dog park. But we’re talking seriously dog-park obsessed here—as in, the type of obsession where your dog tails your every step, just waiting for you to pick up the leash and lead them out the front door.

If your dog is always antsy for trips to the dog park, it’s likely because they’re eager to socialize with the other pups. This is a good sign that your dog would benefit from a new friend.

They Have Post-Playdate Depression

You know how us humans experience post-vacation or post-concert depression? Well, pups can experience the same thing after a playdate.

If your dog seems to be in low spirits the day after a playdate, it might be a sign that they need some extra company. However, age can play a factor in this, so be mindful of that when assessing your dog’s mood.

For example, if it’s your dog’s very first time playing with another dog, a bit of post-playdate depression comes as less of a surprise. Once it’s no longer a novel experience, you may find that your dog actually enjoys having some alone time after a playdate.

Finding the Right New Friend

Each dog has a unique personality and rich sense of self, so it’s essential to get to know your dog well before adopting a new dog. However, if your pup shows any of the signs above, it’s worth considering adding a new friend to your family.
