Importance of Maintaining a Coolant Filtration System

A coolant filtration system is widely used with industrial machinery, particularly in devices that work with diesel engines. It is a system that consists of multiple functioning parts built to work in a particular order to maintain the proper function of the machine it serves. Certain heating processes can cause machine breakdown and mechanical failure. Filtration systems help prevent these issues and maintain operational continuity.

Maintenance tips to keep everything running smoothly

Did you know that a machine’s cooling system is responsible for as much as 40% of engine failures? Reduced maintenance—especially of the industrial oil filter and other critical parts of a coolant filtration system—can lead to breakdowns. Newer diesel engines work best when the cooling system is equipped with fully formulated coolant liquid. Pre-mixed glycol-based coolants containing a substantial additive package, along with deionized water, are ideal for diesel engines. A proper formulation of coolant fluid is crucial if you want an engine to run trouble-free.

Coolant filtration systems work in hostile environments with extreme temperatures and where high velocity, metallic, and mechanical components run side by side. Without proper maintenance, your cooling system can get corroded and fail to perform as designed. Controlling the pH levels of your coolant is crucial to prevent extensive corrosion and cavitation. A poorly maintained cooling system can lead to a coolant leak from corroded components like the radiator, as well as other costs to fix problems like liner cavitation and engine corrosion. These costly problems can be prevented with proper maintenance of your industrial oil filter and every other component of your coolant filtration system.

OEMs demand the use of glycol-based coolants (40-60% concentration) throughout the year, regardless of your machine’s ambient temperature. A 50-50 glycol-water solution in your coolant filtration system will raise the fluid’s boiling point by 8 degrees Celsius and overpower its freezing point from 0 to -37 degrees Celsius. The result is excellent corrosion protection for your industrial oil filter.

In addition to an industrial oil filter, a water filter is one of the most important components of a coolant filtration system. A water filter makes it easy to determine when a cooling system requires servicing. Water filters also keep the corrosion inhibitor level in check and monitor the cleanliness within the coolant. This helps protect the water pump from usual wear and tear.

For a coolant filtration system to keep working as it should, effective fluid processes must be maintained. An effective filtration system helps extend the life of water based coolants by maintaining cleanliness and tolerance. Extending the life of your coolant may be smart financially, but it does carry extra responsibility when it comes to fluid management. During the extended life of your coolant fluid, constant monitoring must be done to see when the coolant is depleting due to normal spillage, evaporation, or carryout. The evaporation, spillage, and carryout rate of your coolant must be taken into account so you can formulate an effective strategy for replenishing lost volume.

Effective fluid make-up procedures are crucial in maintaining the proper fluid levels within a coolant filtration system, as well as in protecting the coolant from unwanted and potentially dangerous chemical reactions.

To maintain ideal fluid-make-up, one must:

Pre-mix the coolant fluid concentrate with the right amount of water before it can be added into the system. It is important to use treated water, such as RO or DI, for the coolant make-up to prevent unwanted chemical reactions that could end up damaging your engine. The new solution in your coolant filtration system must be added in the “dirty” compartment so that it can be thoroughly mixed with the older solution before being sent to work. This is important to prevent lean coolant or too rich of a coolant—both of which can hurt the filtration operation.

Monitoring the concentration of your coolant fluid is also crucial to make sure that the system has the right water to oil concentration, hence keeping your entire system well adjusted for efficient performance. Keeping a tally of your regular coolant spillage, carry-out, and evaporation is key to maintaining proper fluid make-up.
