Injured in an NYC Accident? Here’s What to Do

Have you recently been injured in a New York City traffic accident? Are you wondering what to do next?

New York City is one of the most crowded places in the world. If you’re involved in a car accident, it can be difficult to figure out what to do next.

That’s why we’ve created this guide.

Read on to discover what to do after you’re injured in an NYC accident.

Stop and Notify the Police

The law actually requires that the driver of a vehicle involved in an accident stop at the scene. Unless the position of your vehicle is causing a dangerous situation, you also shouldn’t move them.

Ideally, you’ll be able to stay the scene until the police arrive, as this will allow you to give a statement and explain what happened from your point of view. If you’re not able to stick around until the police arrive, then make sure to follow up soon after the accident and request a copy of the police report.

Get Medical Help If Needed

If anyone is suffering from serious injuries at the scene of the accident, don’t hesitate to call 911.

Until help arrives, take care of yourself and others as needed. However, don’t perform first aid unless you are trained to do so. Also, don’t move an unconscious or immobile person unless you’re doing so to save their life.

Even if you feel okay after the accident and were lucky enough to walk away without feeling hurt, you should still schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible after the accident. Your no-fault doctors will look you over and may even order some tests to make sure everything is okay.

Exchange Information

After the accident, it’s also very important that you exchange information with the other driver. It’s actually required by law that drivers exchange the following information:

  • Name and address
  • Name and identification number of insurance companies
  • License, registration, and insurance card information

Also, when a police officer arrives, make sure you find out their name, precinct, and badge number. You and your legal representative can request a copy of the police report at the precinct the next day.

Don’t Make Any Statements

Apart from exchanging the necessary information with the other driver, you should not engage in conversation with them.

You may end up saying something in the heat of the moment that could later be used against you in court. All you need to do is tell the police officer your version of events and then be on your way.

Hire a Lawyer

If you’re seeking compensation for your injuries and the damage to your vehicle, then it’s a good idea to hire a lawyer.

There are plenty of lawyers out there who specialize in car accidents and personal injuries, so finding the right representation shouldn’t be a problem. Just make sure you thoroughly vet the lawyer before hiring.
