Is Weed Delivery Legal In Washington?

Weed is one of the latest things in a long list of items you can get delivered to your house. Due to the increase in its acceptance and federal legalization, weed can now be delivered to your door by anyone in the United States. This is possible only in those states where cultivation and distribution are legal. However, in some states like Washington, DC weed delivery is totally illegal. So if you reside in Washington and you need weed, you will have to visit a legally registered weed dispensary.

Read on to learn about the laws surrounding weed delivery in Washington, DC, and more.

Cannabis Laws In Washington DC

As you may know, cannabis is legal in Washington, D.C., but there are still a lot of laws surrounding its use. In November 2014, D.C. residents approved a ballot measure that made marijuana legal for personal use. Currently, in DC, Initiative 71 permits adults 21 years of age or older to possess up to two ounces of marijuana. Any person under 21 with more than two ounces of marijuana may be subject to arrest and a fine. Also, adults 21 years of age or older are permitted to grow no more than six plants (3 adult plants and 3 seedlings) for recreational use. If there are multiple adults in one home, the household should not have more than 12 plants in total. This is a big step forward, as it allows people to have cannabis in their homes without fear of being prosecuted. However, medical marijuana patients are not permitted to cultivate their marijuana plants at home.

Furthermore, the Cannabis Employment Protections Amendment Act of 2022 has banned employers from refusing to hire or fire an employee based on cannabis use. This means the law protects people’s jobs even if they choose to consume cannabis legally. Also, possession of marijuana-related drug paraphernalia is legal for adults 21+ in D.C. with a limit of one ounce. As for the commercialization of weed, Washington, DC frowns at the sales of marijuana and related products across the state. This makes the sale and delivery of weed illegal in Washington, DC.

Cannabis Weed Delivery Law In DC

Since all medically unlicensed adults in the state can grow their weed for recreational purposes, there’s really no need to trade weed in exchange for money in the state.

That being said, some people have tried to find a way around it to sell marijuana commercially. However, it is not in exchange for money; they exchange the weed for a gift.

Companies do this by “gifting” weed in exchange for purchasing other products sold by the company. This means if the company sells clothing, food, juice, wristwatches or anything legal, you can buy their products, and you’ll receive a thank you weed alongside your purchased goods when they’re delivered to your doorstep. Though this weed trade style looks legal, it isn’t completely illegal and, as such, can land you in real trouble with the law if they choose to investigate.

Common Ways People Use to circumvent the No Weed Delivery Law

The first and most important thing is that there is nothing like a “weed delivery business” in Washington, DC. The weed industry in this state is highly regulated, and delivery services are currently illegal.

That being said, here are some of the ways people use to get around weed delivery in Washington, D.C

The most common way to offer weed delivery services in Washington, DC, is by partnering with licensed medical marijuana dispensaries in the state. If you’re a weed manufacturer with third-party tested marijuana buds and other cannabis products, you can reach out to approved cannabis dispensaries in Washington, DC, to sell your marijuana products. This way, you’ll have your products delivered to your clients through the medical dispensary. With this option, you may not need to worry too much about the legal standard required to offer weed delivery services in DC.

The other option is to collaborate with cannabis-friendly businesses. Though these companies can’t offer weed delivery, they can permit you to sell cannabis on their business premises.

Though weed delivery is illegal in Washington, DC, you can still have weed delivered to your door if you follow the methods mentioned above. Also, to avoid getting into any legal problems, it is always best to get a medical marijuana card and purchase your marijuana buds from well recognized and legalized cannabis dispensaries across the state.
