Is your Network Secure

After setting up a wireless connection at your home or workplace, it is fun to start connecting your devices to play the latest version of a game or planning a night for Netflix and chill. Keep in mind that setting up a router without taking any steps to protect yourself from bad guys is like buying a new house and moving with unchanged locks.

In this post, we shall discuss four things to ensure your WiFi network safety and security. Let’s read on so that you can surf the internet with peace of mind.

1. Change the Default Login Credentials

The first step you need to take to protect your wireless device is changing the default login credentials. Most of the time, the default password of a router is ‘000,’ or its serial number. It means if anyone has seen your router or taken a snapshot of the same, he can reconfigure your internet device to steal the information.

Therefore, whenever you buy a router or a wireless internet device, it is important to change the login credentials instead of setting it up and enjoying the internet.

2. Know Other WiFi Networks

While it is important to change the credentials of a new router, it is crucial to know the other WiFi networks installed around you. Sometimes, a freak hacker can get into a business to plug in a tiny WiFi router into the Ethernet network so that he can enjoy access from outside of the building.

You can easily identify any rogue WiFi networks around you through a good network analyzer. Through this technology, you can find out the unknown networks in your building and shut them down.

3. Change and Hide your SSID

The SSID is the identity of your WiFi network. It is the name through which people can easily find it and connect to the network. Your provider sets it, the common combination of its serial number is like, S27N47553’, or even worse, tells the attacker what kind of router you are using, like ‘NetGear009’.

As the SSID can tell an attacker what kind of router or network you are using, it will be easier for him to carry out the best-attacking method according to your network provider. Therefore, you can stop an attacker from attacking your WiFi network by changing your SSID.

4. Set up the Firewall

A firewall acts as a barrier, and most of the time, there are two general rules when you install a firewall-

RULE 1: Don’t allow anyone from the outside world to connect inside. Commonly it is known as Any: Deny.

RULE 2: Allow responses to requests coming from inside to come inside.

There are different things to add to your firewall, and ‘Enable Ping Blocking’ is one of them. It would be great to enable it on your router if your device supports it. Under it, your router will respond if someone sends a ping.

Sometimes, a hacker uses a program to continuously send a ping to your router to check out if your device is or not. After sending pings, he will try to figure out what’s running on it, clearly a privacy breach. By enabling ping blocking you can easily prevent a hacker from breaching your privacy.

The Final Words

While there are many methods to secure your network, we have mentioned the easiest and the most effective ways to yourself from hackers above. You can also encrypt to secure your WiFi traffic by logging into your router and setting the encryption level to WPA2. Make sure to check if the router supports this setting or not before purchasing one.
