Making a Koi Pond, Where to Start?

Are you a fan of ornamental fish, especially koi? For those of you koi fans, you will certainly not be confused anymore to make a koi pond. Did you know that a koi pond can enhance your home design? The presence of a koi pond makes your home look beautiful. Especially if a koi pond is added to the presence of various green plants around its walls or a fountain model that can make the eye interested in seeing the koi pond in your yard. That is what makes koi ponds more desirable than making aquariums for some people.

For those of you who are beginners, of course, you will be confused with the process of making a koi pond. What should be considered in making a koi pond? How is a koi pond that is safe and ensures health and growth for these beautiful koi?

Raising koi has many advantages, but it is not easy to raise koi, which are believed to have originated from Japan, because the quality of koi pond water must always be maintained. This is related to the design and method of making a good koi pond. Koi should be placed in a large pond. For its water needs, every inch of fish is equal to 10 gallons of water. This is not unreasonable. Koi will live a long time if they are in a place where the water is kept clean and quality.

In addition to the volume of water, it is also necessary to pay attention to the pH of the koi pond water. Check the pH of the water before and after the fish is added. Especially for koi, pH around 7 is the ideal pH. If the pH is higher than 7, the danger of ammonia poisoning will be more susceptible to koi. Meanwhile, the pH can also drop to 5.5 as a result of the activity of fish, plants, and bacteria. Of course, this is very dangerous for koi. The size of the koi pond should be adjusted according to the density or number of fish. In addition, the construction of a koi pond drain is also something that needs attention. Normally, cleaning the koi pond is done twice a year.

It is not only the design of the fish pond at home that needs to be considered, but also see whether the pond will be made indoors or outdoors because this affects the sunlight that the ornamental fish will receive. Koi ponds should get enough sunlight. Not too hot, but not too humid and not exposed to sunlight. Good lighting in a koi pond triggers the maximum development of your koi. But, the side effect is that the growth of algae or moss will also be rapid, so it’s no wonder the pool water quickly turns green.

Striving for indoor koi ponds should be exposed to sufficient sunlight. Koi need warm sunlight for at least three hours per day. Lack of sunlight can make the koi’s body color fade. Therefore, create a pool that is bright enough. If the fish pond is indoors, then you can shine it with incandescent lights instead of sunlight.
