Many small and self-owned businesses were waiting for improvement with the pandemic to get back to work

For the longest time, the UK and most statistical agencies did not have a proper understanding of the number of people losing their jobs throughout the pandemic. The main reason was that it was difficult to get an accurate idea since there were too many variables. The information gathered about the unemployment rate was usually collated over three months so was always behind, not forgetting the UK saw rapid changes during the pandemic. Many people who were out of jobs were not always unemployed since they were not planning on getting back into the workforce. While this might not have been the case for a lot of them, it was for a large number. All these variables lead to the unemployment rate staying stable at 3.9% for the longest time with a lot more people losing their jobs and the numbers not adding up. To prevent a larger number of people from getting sick, people started working from home and checking in through video calls. Both internal and external meetings with clients were now online, which was no longer seen as unprofessional since it was slowly turning into the norm.

Additionally, there were predictions that there would be a massive unemployment issue as soon as the furlough scheme stopped, which was likely to happen at the end of October, according to a statement by Government officials. To balance the unemployment issues that would be faced, the Government thought that it would be best that companies fend for themselves and within the economy, it didn’t seem like this was happening. The only way to guarantee positive results was through the opening up of the economy, which they started doing through the encouragement of

people to support small businesses. Coffee shops and restaurants were a smart place to start since they were owned by individuals who were currently not benefitting from the lockdown or the closed economy.

Employers in most companies were not sure how they were supposed to get through these changes.
