Moving In? Here’s 5 Hacks to Make Moving Easier!

Moving houses is an exciting chapter of your life, as you take your family to a new home. However, if you’ve moved homes before, then you know the hassles and exhaustion of moving your belongings from one place to another, and having to clean up in your new home the same day you arrive there.

Never tackle the hassles of moving into your new home again! Here are 5 hacks to help you make the most of the transition, and give you a positive experience as you embark on your new living space! Plus, our hacks will make moving in faster – which means the sooner you can host that housewarming party.

1. Hire Moving In Cleaning Services

If you’re moving into a new home, all the construction debris might still be laying around. You wouldn’t want to move into a new home just to have to clean everything out. After all, you’re already tired from packing up all your belongings from your previous home, and having to worry about the nails, sawdust, and debris left behind can be a hassle.

Alternatively, if you’re moving into a previously inhabited home, then you may want to clean and disinfect the house before you move in. You don’t know what the previous owners left behind, and you have no idea about their cleanliness standards.

It is a good idea to hire moving in cleaning services that will make sure you’re getting into a home that is completely clean – ready for occupancy! Move in cleaning will get rid of all that trash, debris, and belongings of the previous occupant before you even move into your home. All you need to worry about is where to place your furniture!

2. Have a “Go Kit” Ready

A “Go Kit,” or rather a moving-in kit, is a storage box full of items you need on your first day of moving in. Moving houses is a tiring experience, so don’t expect to unpack all of your essentials on the first day alone! Your Go Kit should have all the essentials you need:

  • Drinking water
  • Snacks (for kids)
  • Paper plates, cups, and disposable utensils – so you don’t need to wash dishes
  • Toiletries (toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, etc.)
  • Pajamas and extra clothes
  • Towels or facial tissues

3. Label Boxes with Rooms They’re Going To

You may already know to label boxes with their contents, and whether these contents are fragile, but in the mess of moving in, you may forget which boxes go to which rooms. Avoid the confusion by labeling the boxes with the corresponding room they belong to. This way, you won’t need to check the contents before dragging the boxes to their respective rooms.

Color code your boxes with different stickers, and have a master copy with you to make it easier to decipher the color coding. Labeling the boxes helps you keep organized as it tracks where the boxes go right as you unload them from the moving van. Number the boxes as well, and jot down how many boxes you need per room so you’ll know if you misplaced a box.

4. Cushion Boxes with Shirts and Towels

Don’t spend on those bubble wrap packages that you’ll just throw away later on. Make use of what you have at home: shirts, towels, and even pillows make terrific cushions that can be used to shield plates, ceramics, and other fragile items. The plush softness of these materials hold fragile items in place without crushing them.

5. Keep a List of Where to Change Your Address

You’ve thought about all the bits and pieces of moving houses, but don’t forget to change your address! You may have a bunch of forms that still have your old address, and it isn’t ideal to have to deal with your mail getting shipped to your old address. It poses a hassle to both you, and the new occupant of your old place.

Keep a list of the forms that you need to fill out to change your address. For one, your credit card bills contain your personal information, so making sure you get your bills in the right address is essential. Here’s a list of places you need to change your home address:

  • Credit Card Bill Statements and Banking
  • Home Utilities (electricity, water, phone bill, etc.)
  • Home Services (childcare, doctors, home stylists, etc.)
  • Government Offices (mail forwarding, social security, etc.)
  • Important Memberships and Subscriptions
  • Delivery Address (e-Commerce, food deliveries, etc.)
