Myths & Misconceptions about Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl flooring is one of today’s best flooring options.  In fact, as far as “bang for your buck” floorings, Vinyl is a great choice. The look and durability of Vinyl flooring have improved a lot with new technology and creative design concepts.  It has become one of the fastest-growing flooring options in the market. Yet, there are numerous misconceptions about it.  Some are based on old partial truths, and some are just wrong.  This article will address many of those myths.

Laminate and Vinyl are NOT the same.  At first glance, the overall look of both flooring types may seem similar.  But, on further inspection, the differences become more apparent. Their formation and structure are different.  Laminate’s core is made from wood powder or plywood. It is stiff to work with, and it reacts negatively to moisture. The Vinyl flooring core is Vinyl, and the planks or tiles are flexible and pliable.  Vinyl can stand up to moisture.

There is a misconception that Vinyl is not suitable for kitchens and baths. The opposite is true, in fact.  Because Vinyl can tolerate moisture, it is an excellent choice for kitchens or bathrooms. It is easy to maintain, and spillage can be removed with a mop or towel. It is resistant to stains and can tolerate spills of varying temperatures.  Additionally, it is soft to stand on, so it is suitable for long periods of cooking.

That self-adhesive backing is faulty is another myth about Vinyl flooring.  As long as the flooring is good quality, many brands have strong adhesive, and it sticks well. It will adhere to any smooth, clean underlay without needing additional product.

There is an impression that Vinyl has a monotonous look.  That might have been true when Vinyl was new to the market.  However, with modern technology, the look of Vinyl is extensive.  In fact, Vinyl flooring can be created to resemble almost any medium.  It can look like wood in different shades and types. Since it comes in planks, it can even simulate the look of installed hardwood. It can appear like ceramic with an endless option of design.  Again, since it comes in tiles as well, it hard to tell the difference between other tiles and those made of Vinyl.  There are even print options of porcelain tile, stone, concrete, and even metallic looks.

A mistaken belief is that the image on the Vinyl flooring will fade. The planks and tiles have a high-quality image embossed on to them depending on what material it is trying to mimic. Many are under the impression that high traffic and time will see this image fading.  However, the image is sealed with a highly durable clear coat that saves the image.  The floor will maintain its look for many years.

Like all flooring, there are variations in quality, grade and make of Vinyl. Flooring is made to fit various applications and differing environments. There will be variations in thickness, in moisture and/or heat resistance, in friction levels, in adhesive backing. There are selections considered Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT), which are already sealed, so there is no additional cost.  This is an area where a flooring specialist will be especially helpful.  Access their knowledge and experience to help make the best choice.

For some reason, there is a misunderstanding that Vinyl flooring is accident-prone.  Vinyl flooring is actually a higher resistance option than other similar flooring options. Slipping accidents would be minimal.  If something were to happen, Vinyl flooring is softer than other flooring material, so injuries would be less harmful.

Another misconception about Vinyl flooring is that installation is difficult.  Some believe it is labour intensive, but it is more time consuming than hard work.  However, turning to professionals is always the best choice when it comes to constructing or renovating a building.  This is true for flooring as well. Talk to the Specialist at Home Flooring in Calgary; they can make the best recommendations for any project. The same holds true for the actual installation; let the professionals do it.  It will be done right, and it will be done in good time.

There is another myth that Vinyl flooring is only suitable for smaller spaces. It seems that this belief stems from the use of the self-adhesive tiles. The tiles need to be meticulously laid so that they do not overlap or buckle. This does not prevent the tiles or panels from being used in a larger application.

Many myths and misconceptions come from a lack of knowledge and understanding. This holds true for flooring as well.  That is why its best to turn to the experts.  Let the flooring specialists at Flooring Store Calgary help you with your flooring selections.  Call us at 403-984-4100 or email us at Info@Homeflooring.ca
