Preparing to Move Out of Your Parents’ House

The decision to move out of your parents’ home is a big one, and it requires some consideration and planning. Luckily, by following a few simple steps, you can make the process much easier. That way, you’ll become more independent and grow in the process.

Get Your Finances in Order

Whether you want to purchase a home or just rent an apartment, it’s a good idea to have enough funds in your bank to afford it. You’ll want to create a savings plan so you can meet your goals and move out when desired. Try to cut back any unnecessary spending, whether that involves eating at home, cutting out subscriptions, or reducing your shopping.

You might consider refinancing student loans into a new payment with the help of a private lender. That often gets you a lower interest rate, reducing how much you need to pay every month. You can use a student loan refinancing calculator to know how much to budget for each month.

This is the time to consider what it will cost to live on your own. If you want to rent a place, make sure your monthly income is enough to cover utilities, rent, required insurance, and other expenses. Try to find an apartment that you can afford comfortably instead of stretching your budget. That way, you’ll still be able to save something every month.

Communicate with Everyone

Your parents might be hinting that it is time for you to move out, or they may want you to stay there as long as possible. No matter what their opinions are, make sure you tell them what you are planning. Even if they are happy for you, they’re likely somewhat sad as well. Try to be sensitive to their feelings as you tell them the plan.

You’ll want to create a moving plan that everyone can agree upon. You might want to set a goal for when you expect to leave. Of course, if you’re moving out to start a job in a new area, the date may already be decided. But if you don’t have any set date, you might not have an incentive to get started with moving out. Remember, it doesn’t have to be set in stone, but it’s a great starting point.

Preparing to Move

Unless you don’t have much accumulated over the years, it’s often helpful to have professionals or friends assist you. If you are having your friends help, you might consider renting a truck to pack your stuff. Or, if it’s a shorter distance, you could ask a friend with a larger vehicle to assist. And you can also have professionals who offer labor only to help you load a rental truck.

If you have too many things, consider going through them before moving out. When you don’t have as many things to move, it will be cheaper and more manageable. You might consider donating things you don’t use that much, and you might list better things in a consignment store. That also gives you a bit of extra cash.
